1
IUI Treatment
2
What Is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known
    artificial insemination, is a fertility
treatment that involves placing sperm inside a
    womans uterus to facilitate fertilization.
  • During intrauterine insemination (IUI), sperm are
washed in a special media that promotes their
health and facilitates the separation of the
fast-moving sperm from the sluggish or non-moving
    sperm
  • The goal of IUI is to increase the number of
sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and
subsequently increase the chance of fertilization.

3
Who Needs IUI?
  • IUI selected as a fertility treatment for any of
    the following conditions
  • Unexplained infertility
  • A hostile cervical condition, including cervical
    mucus problems
  • Cervical scar tissue from past procedures which
may hinder the sperms ability to enter the
    uterus
  • Ejaculation dysfunction
  • IUI is not recommended for the following
    patients
  • Women who have severe disease of the fallopian
    tubes
  • Women with a history of pelvic infections
  • Women with moderate to severe endometriosis

4
IUI Process
  • The male partner has to provide a semen sample on
    the day of insemination.
  • During the IUI procedure, The semen sample is
prepared and then inserted through the cervix and
into the uterus by a thin plastic catheter.
  • They use a small syringe to insert the sperm
through the tube directly into your uterus.
  • Pregnancy happens if sperm fertilizes an egg, and
the fertilized egg implants in the lining of your
    uterus.

5
What Is IVF?
  • IVF process starts off with taking fertility
medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce
more number of eggs and is monitored by your
doctor through blood test and ultrasounds
  • When your eggs are mature, your eggs will be
retrieved by inserting a very fine needle through
the vagina into the ovary under ultrasound
guidance. The entire process is performed under
general anesthesia, so there no pain.
  • The retrieved eggs are fertilized with the washed
and prepared sperm. In case of severe male factor
infertility, a single sperm is injected into each
egg through a procedure called ICSI
    (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).
  • The embryos are then grown to the blastocyst
stage (day 5 or 6). The healthy embryo(s) can by
either be transferred into the uterus or frozen,
or cryopreserved, until you are ready.

6
Differences Between IUI and IVF Procedures
  • Two of the most commonly used fertility
    treatments methods are intrauterine insemination
(IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • There are more differences between the two
    procedures than similarities,
  • The biggest difference is that the sperm is not
injected into the egg during IUI to achieve
    fertilization.
  • The fertilization is still meant to happen
naturally through IUI doctors just help to
place the sperm a little closer to the egg
    through this process.

8
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Risks and
Success Rate
  • What Are The Risks?
  • There is a small risk of infections after the IUI
procedure. If medications are used to activate
ovulation, there is a risk of pregnancy with
    multiples.
  • A big number of eggs could be matured and
released at the same time which could cause
enlarging the ovary, cramping and fluid buildup
    in the abdomen.
  • Whats the Success Rate?
  • Each couple will respond differently to
IUI, which could be more difficult to figure out
its success. The following factors can affect the
    outcome as listed
  • The age
  • Underlying infertility diagnosis
  • If the fertility drugs are used
  • You will probably know in about 2 weeks if you
become pregnant, you will most likely miss your
    next period.
  • A blood test will confirm whether or not you are
    pregnant.

9
How Much Does IUI Cost?
  • IUI is less expensive than IVF, and is usually
covered by insurance, making it an accessible,
    popular and minimally invasive procedure.
  • Other treatments like IVF is very expensive since
it has a higher success rate. But in the present
day, IUI is the more popular treatment for
infertility and IUI treatment success rate is
also quite good and too in your budget. It is a
safe, cheap and an effective treatment method for
    infertility.

10
IUI vs. IVF Which Is Right for You?
  • IUI is a less expensive, less invasive and is
often the first line of treatment for couples
with mild male factor infertility, unexplained
infertility, and for women under the age of 40.
  • In women that have failed IUI cycles, advanced
endometriosis or blocked fallopian tubes, IVF is
typically the best treatment option with the
    highest chance of success.
