Title: How Scoliosis affects adults

1
WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS? HOW IT AFFECTS ADULTS? IS IT
POSSIBLE TO FIX?
2
INTRODUCTION
  • Scoliosis is the medical condition that occurs
due to sideways curvature of the spine forming a
    C or S shape.
  • It is generally observed in children which is
    healed naturally over time.
  • However, scoliosis can be found in adults which
may be newly diagnosed or existing from
    childhood.
  • There may be several causes of scoliosis such as
    cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
  • However, the causes of most scoliosis are still
    unknown.
  • Scoliosis can be diagnosed by X-ray of the spine.

HOW IT AFFECTS ADULTS?
  1. Scoliosis affects the body of an adult in various
ways. Some children develop this deformity at a
young age which may persist even after they grow
up whereas some adults are observed to develop
scoliosis later in their life. Scoliosis has some
major effects as follows in the adults.
  2. An adult affected with Scoliosis experiences pain
    at the back.
  3. There may be a bulge or slight deformity at the
site of pain at the back of the person having
scoliosis. This occurs due to the rotation of
    muscles or rib cage rotation.

4
  • One affected by scoliosis may lose his height or
some changes may occur in his stature due to the
    deformity in the spine.
  • Due to the compressure of lungs in scoliosis, one
may experience quick fatigue or shortness of
    breath
  • An adult affected by scoliosis tends to lose his
appetite due to premature hunger satiety.

TREATMENTS TO FIX SCOLIOSIS
  • According to the research of the council of the
Spine doctors, most people affected by scoliosis
do not need surgery to fix it. There are several
non-surgical treatments that can cure scoliosis.
However, if one is not cured by those treatments,
he has to undergo surgery. After the diagnosis
of scoliosis through X-ray and measuring the
degree of curvature of the spine through MRI, one
can opt for the following treatments.
  • Non-surgical treatments
  • The doctors suggest the following treatments to
    cure scoliosis without surgery.
  • In most cases, the patients can fix scoliosis
    using the following methods.

6
  • Medication The medicines prescribed by doctors
target the significant pain in the back. These
    are generally nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDs). In the case of bulge or
    inflammation, the doctors prescribe
    anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.
  • Exercise The Spine doctors in Bangalore
suggests exercising as a fix to scoliosis to
strengthen and stretch the back. However, this
may not improve the curvature of the spine
completely but it relieves pain. The patient may
also seek the help of a physiotherapist to
    improve his situation.
  • Back braces It provides support to the spine.
However, this method is rarely used for adults.
  • Spinal injection These are generally steroidal
or local anaesthetic in nature which can relieve
a patient from the pain for a few weeks to a
month. It is a short-term solution.

SURGICAL TREATMENTS
  • An adult affected with scoliosis can undergo
surgery only when the degree of curvature is
severe or if the nonsurgical treatments were not
effective. In some cases of scoliosis, the
patient experiences nervous problems such as
numbness from back to the foot. In such
circumstances, one can opt for surgery.
  • The orthopaedic hospital in Bangalore offers
different types of surgery for curing scoliosis.
These are laminectomy (removal of a section of
one of the bones in your spine), discectomy
(removal of a section of one of the gel-like
discs between the vertebrae) and spinal fusion
(joining two or more the vertebrae).
  • After undergoing a surgical process, one may take
a year or so to recover. One should monitor the
status of such deformity through MRI and CT scans
to ensure that the nerves do not get affected.
