Title: Breakfast at Tiffany’s dress costume

The Iconic Little Black Dress of Breakfast
at Tiffanys
  • Remember the opening scene of the all-time hit
1961 romantic comedy movie Breakfast at
Tiffanys? Audrey Hepburn alights from a taxi
early morning in New York and walks slowly
towards Tiffanys store dressed in a black dress.
The dress is cited as one of the most iconic
items in the history of the twentieth century and
the most famous little black dress of all time.

Breakfast at Tiffanys dress costume
  • This Breakfast at Tiffanys dress costume was
chosen as the best dress ever worn by a woman in
a film in a survey conducted in 2010 by LOVEFILM.
The outfit has stood the test of time over
decades and replicas of the dress are still worn
by women around the world as an extra layer to
their glam quotient. Incidentally, another outfit
worn by Audrey Hepburn, the white dress and hat
worn in My Fair Lady, was voted sixth in the same
    survey

  • This black dress was designed by famous
French designer Hubert de Givenchy who was a very
close friend of Audrey Hepburn. Givenchy had two
copies of the dress made and one was taken by
Hepburn to the producers Paramount. However, they
decided that the lower half of the dress which
revealed a considerable part of the leg would not
be suitable for the movie. This part was
redesigned by Edith Head and became the dress
that the world saw in the film. Surprisingly,
none of the dresses created by Givenchy in its
originality were used either in promotional
    photography or the movie.

  • The private archive of Givenchy has the
original hand-stitched dress. The copy that
Audrey took to Paramount is displayed at the
Museo del Traje in Madrid while another copy was
auctioned at Christies in December 2006. It was
purchased by an anonymous buyer over the
telephone. The bidding ended between 50,000 and
70,000 but the final price was a stunning
467,200. The proceeds of the auction of
this Breakfast at Tiffanys dress costume went
towards building a school for the poor people of
    Calcutta.

  • This little black dress is a Givenchy black
Italian sheath evening gown. The dress costume is
best described by Christies in its catalog
before the auction a sleeveless, floor-length
gown with fitted bodice embellished at the back
with distinctive cut-out décolleté, the skirt
slightly gathered at the waist and slit to the
thigh on one side, labeled inside on the
waistband Givenchy accompanied by a pair of
black elbow-length gloves. The bodice is
slightly open at the back and leaves the
    shoulders uncovered.

  • The actress also wears a pair of matching
gloves of the same color and a five-string pearl
necklace with a clasp at the center. The necklace
was made by Roger Scemama, a Frenchman, who
designed jewelry for Givenchy. The overall look
of Audrey Hepburn in the opening scene of the
film has been described as ultra-feminine and
    Parisian.
