Anyone who has spent time in a city has probably
seen a skateboarder weaving through the streets.
Being able to do this is thanks to one special
material - polyurethane.

Humble Beginnings

• The year is 1955. America has just gotten out of
  an economic recession, and there is a boom in the
  roller skating industry, driving people to roller
  clubs across the nation. 
• Surfers decided to put their twist on this newly
  popular pastime to create what we know as
  skateboarding. 
• Skateboarding began to take hold in California
  and Hawaii by the late 50s.

• The first skateboard wheels were heavy, clunky,
  and prone to losing grip on the streets. and
  cemented pools. 
• Vibrations were severe with this original wheel.
• Some experimented with clay-composite varieties,
  but those came and went.

A Polymer Steals the Spotlight

• In the early 1970s, a breakthrough material was
  gaining popularity called polyurethane. 
• The first polyurethane skateboard wheels were an
  instant success.
• The elastic nature of the material allowed for a
  faster ride and quicker turning without worrying
  the wheel could slide-out.

Material Improvements Change the Game

• A few years later, high rebound polyurethane took
  over the market with their even greater
  capabilities.
• It had superior wear combined with increased grip
  and a smoother ride, which made for a total
  rebirth of the sport. 
• The newest generation of high Shore hardness
  wheels is now making its way into skate shops and
  winning competitions globally.

Today, polyurethane wheels account for almost
every single skate and rollerblade wheel on the
market.
