2The FACTS about Hardwood Decking
If concrete or pavers are not your style, then a
quality hardwood decking could be just what you
are looking for. A rich, natural hardwood decking
will add a touch of beauty and class to any
swimming pool, balcony or outdoor entertainment
area. But some people may be hesitant about
choosing decking in Adelaide due to maintenance
concerns but just how much maintenance is
required to keep your deck looking like new?

3Before we talk about maintenance, we need to
remember that hardwood decking is a naturally
grown product, so with this in mind its important
to be aware that, as with anything natural
there will be slight inconsistencies. There may
be slight variations in the colour, grain or
finish of the product, however, a good carpenter
will always do their best to hide or minimise any
inconsistencies during the building process.

4To Oil or Not to Oil???
The grain of hardwood decking is very fine and in
some cases it can appear as though the timber has
split. Oiling the deck will re-hydrate the
timber, expand the grain improve the
appearance. Oiling your deck will also give the
timber a deeper, richer finish, however you may
choose to leave your deck natural if thats the
look you prefer and that is perfectly fine. That
said, it is important to note that an unoiled
decking can be susceptible to mould or mildew
during cold, wet or humid weather but this can be
easily cleaned with a deck wash product and a
high pressure sprayer. Any spills on your unoiled
decking would also have to be cleaned up promptly
to avoid permanent staining.

5Oiling your Deck is as easy as 1, 2, 3
Oiling your deck is a relatively simple procedure
much like mopping your floor! You will
need A specific deck wash product, a lambs wool
applicator, with oiling bucket and strainer and
of course, the decking oil (all of which are
available from Bunnings or any hardware
store). We recommend Solver, Cabots or Feast
Watson Natural Oil. A 4 litre can will generally
cover around 20 square metres (for 2 coats) and
will cost around 49.00.

6- Thoroughly wash down your deck using deck wash
and leave to dry for 24 hours. - Apply the oil using a lambs wool applicator,
mopping in the direction of the timber 3 slats
at a time. The specific oiling bucket with
strainer will ensure you have the correct amount
of oil on your applicator for an even coat.
Allow to dry as directed on your oil can. - Apply a second coat when the first coat is dry.

7This process will only need to be repeated
approximately every 12 to 18 months, depending on
your decks exposure to the elements and the type
of oil used. A water based product tends to last
a little longer than an oil based product but the
oil based products look a little more natural.
Colour samples should be available in store
staff available to help you choose your preferred
look.
