Title: 6 Tips to Rule the Art of Conversation

1
6 Tips to Rule the
Art of Conversation
2
  • The art of conversation is an essential skill for
    almost everything in life. Conversation
introduces you to people, important people who
can be your mentors, employers, employees,
partners or friends. Without conversations as the
foundation of these relationships, you have
difficulty building a social circle, starting a
    business or developing your career.
  • When a conversation begins, you should have some
trouble maintaining that momentum - but for most
of us, the hardest part is getting started.
Master these "talking points" to get (and hold) a
    conversation going on

3
Lead with a compliment.
  • Compliments are the best way to start a
conversation. They not only provide a perfect
opening line and a possible door for discussion,
they also make the person feel good about
themselves. Starting the conversation on a
positive note is crucial for the conversation to
    continue
  • It remember, the more specific your praise is,
the better, for example, commenting that a person
is well dressed, "your shoes are cute." It's
concise, honest, and specific and now you've
opened the door to conversation because your
partner has something to talk about.

4
Embrace the little talk.
  • Small talks are taboo for some people, and
although it is not the most rewarding type of
conversation, it is functional and necessary.
Small talk is what leads to a deeper
conversation, in the way a car should gradually
accelerate at a certain speed instead of reaching
    60 miles per hour instantly.
  • Small conversation topics are easy to learn you
can talk about the event you will attend, comment
on an article of food or drink, point out
something about the place or, if you are
desperate, you can talk about the weather. These
are all shared experiences that anyone can relate
to, so they can work for anyone

5
Ask a lot of questions.
  • If you want to move from a small conversation to
a real conversation, you should look for any
opportunity that will lead you to change the
subject. Do not try to change gears suddenly and
talk about something deep or substantial
Instead, wait patiently for the opportunity to
    introduce yourself.
  • The questions are conversational lubricants. Pay
as much attention to the conversation as possible
and use them to move forward. You should be
    exploring the whole conversation for
opportunities to "tell me more." Keep possible
questions in the back of your mind. Try to be as
    specific and inquisitive as possible.

6
Be kind.
  • This should be obvious, but don't neglect it.
Your level of friendship can make or break the
receptivity of the other party involved. Enter
the conversation with a big smile and open body
language, and stay open, receptive and smiling
politely for as much of the conversation as you
    can.
  • Try not to cross your arms, appear distracted or
allow your eyes to wander. Keep eye contact when
you can and do your best to show that you are
really interested in what they have to say.

7
Let the other person speak
  • This is another important point. If you enter a
conversation and immediately begin to dominate it
with your own anecdotes, comments and
explanations, the other person can immediately
disinterested. Instead, try to keep the focus on
    them as much as possible.
  • Using frequently asked questions is a good
strategy for this purpose. If you find that the
conversation is diminishing, or if the person
simply does not answer the questions well, feel
free to jump into yourself. Tell a funny story or
a personal anecdote it can be exactly what the
    conversation needs to continue.

8
Keep it light.
  • Try to keep the conversation light and accessible
as possible. If you immediately start complaining
about your work or talk about what is wrong in
your life, people will want to avoid it. If you
tell a joke or a funny story, they will be much
    more likely to stay.
  • People tend to gravitate towards others with a
positive attitude, so keep your conversation
material positive. If you have difficulties with
this, try to memorize a handful of good jokes or
good stories to use when you meet new people

9
  • These tips are written from a practical
perspective, so they can be used in almost any
environment, from a professional networking event
to a bar or restaurant. The key is to overcome
your preconceived notions and doubts and accept
the reality of small conversations. With a little
practice and more confidence, you shouldn't have
trouble starting a conversation with anyone,
    anywhere.
