INTRODUCTION
You must store oil drums indoor away from
potential contamination which includes dust,
moisture, humidity from process steam and
washdown areas. Its not a good practice to store
oil drums on the factory floor or inside a
machine shop.

Follow Oil Storage Best Practices
When stored on the factory floor, contaminants
like welding particles or metalworking and
production dust could easily find their way into
the drums making your oil dirty. Here are some
drum storage best practices
4
  1. Maintain Temperature

During the day, liquid and the air will expand,
while at night when temperatures fall, they will
contract. Temperature variations will pull
microscopic particles of dust and moisture into
the drum. So, make sure to maintain temperature
all times.
5

2. Keep Drum Bungs Sealed
Drum bungs should be kept sealed and tight at all
times. Use high-quality desiccant or particle
breathers to keep out dirt and moisture.
6

3. Use Drum Covers
If you cant store oil drums as per industry
recommendations, make sure to at least use drum
covers or store the drums horizontally with the
bungs at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.
7

4. Use First In/First Out Method
To maintain a good stock rotation, implement
first-in/first-out (FIFO) method. It will help
you avoid issues related to old or expired oils.
8

Use Recommended Lubrication Storage Methods
The purpose of proper lubrication storage is to
ensure equipment reliability. Poor in-plant
storage practices lead to chemically-depleted,
mixed oils containing contamination. Visit Micro
