About Us
  • How To Master MIG Welding If You're A Beginner
  • My name is Garrett Strong
  • Ive been helping beginners hobbyists learn to
weld online for several years now. Ive helped
thousands of people just like you get started
learning to mig weld. If youd like to get
started, Download my FREE beginners guide to MIG
    welding
  • If youd like to MIG weld aluminum with your wire
feed welder, this step-by-step tutorial will show
    you how
  • If you havent yet mastered MIG welding mild
steel, then you probably need to do that before
you start aluminum welding with the GMAW (MIG)
    process.
  • Heres why
  • When MIG welding aluminium, you use the same gun
angle and gas flow rate (20-30 CFH).
  • However, thats pretty much where the
    similarities end.

MIG Welding Aluminum Basics
  • Aluminum is a tricky metal to weld with a MIG
welder because it takes more heat than mild steel
(Usually in the range of 21 to 24 volts). The
minimum aluminum thickness you should attempt is
roughly 14 ga. To 18 ga. Any thinner than that
and youll need a TIG welder.
  • Aluminum welding with a wire welder is notorious
for having unexpected burn through, and the weld
puddle will literally fall right through the work
piece if youre not moving fast enough. Thats
why you shouldnt attempt to weld thin pieces of
    aluminum.
  • When youre MIG welding mild steel, you can and
should move the MIG gun slow enough to get deep
penetration. Yet, with aluminum, the weld puddle
    resembles that of wet foil.

Steps To Master MIG Welding Fast
  • Step 1 Forget Welding Safety
  • Of course, thats not to say welding safety isnt
important. Its obvious that you WILL need a
welding mask, gloves, long sleeves, leather boots
(and a welding hat if youre welding overhead).
  • However, your main safety should focus on making
solid welds that hold strong. Imagine if you
welded a trailer and you were pulling it on the
highway at 70 m.p.h. Then, out of nowhere you hit
a large pot hole, and BAM. The trailer suddenly
jolts, cracking the welds. The next thing you
know your trailer is now an out of control
missile waiting to destroy any vehicle unlucky
enough to be in your immediate area.

Step 2 Stop Focusing On Perfect Welds
  • Many welders in the online forums will try to
convince you that your welds need to look
perfect, or you shouldnt try at all. This is
complete hog wash. Wouldnt you like to Master
the fundamentals of MIG welding first so you can
make great looking welds later on, or would you
rather listen to these ego maniacs and just give
up because they said your welds arent perfect?
  • The truth is, your welds arent going to be
perfect. Besides, the purpose of MIG welding is
first and foremost to fuse the base metals
    together, not to be perfect.
  • Theres a smart way to PERFECT your MIG welds
well cover that in a minute. And, whats great
is that you will cut your learning curve in half
    when you do this.

What Is A Wire Welder?
  • When you buy a wire welder you will have the
option to buy one that you can hook up a gas tank
to, or you can buy a wire welder that uses only
    flux core wire (gasless).
  • A word of advice if youre a complete beginner to
welding wanting to to learn how to mig weld.
Choose a wire welder that has the ability to hook
a gas cylinder up to because you can use it as a
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) setup, or use it as a flux
    core welder.
  • If you choose to use it as a MIG welder then you
will have to get a bottle of 75/25 (argon/CO2),
or straight CO2 so you have shielding gas
    provided at the weld puddle.
  • If youre wondering what shielding gas is when
using a wire welder, its used to protect the
molten weld puddle from atmospheric gases that
will weaken the weld if the weld puddle is
    exposed.
