What is Stuttering?
Stuttering is a common condition that causes
difficulty speaking fluently. Working with a
speech therapist can greatly improve stuttering
in the long term, while several strategies can
help with managing a stutter on a daily
basis.So that we need to have a stuttering
specialist to guide us on choosing a device.

The problem is that most of them have little or
no training in stuttering. A Fluency Specialist
or Stuttering Specialist is certified by the
Hearing Association. Therefore, qualified to
conduct stuttering treatment.

• Stutter-Free Speech a Prolonged Speech Program

This Stutter-Free Speech Program replaces your
stuttered speech with a new way of talking that
is incompatible with stuttering. We begin with
two hours of therapy in the clinic for five
consecutive days. You start this with a very slow
rate of speaking during which you dont stutter
from the first day of therapy. Then, we use the
Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) machine to help
you control your speech rate. Gradually, we
increase the rate until it approximates normal
speaking.

During the last part of the program, you transfer
this stutter-free speech into speaking situations
outside the clinic and at home. You will start
with very easy speaking situations and short
periods of talking and gradually move to more
difficult situations when you are ready. This
part of the program is completed at home and is
monitored by weekly phone calls with the
therapist. Success in this stuttering or
stammering therapy program depends upon this
carefully managed follow-up program that lasts
about 6 months to one year of daily speaking
practice situations.

This sad state of affairs came about suddenly.
About ten years ago the American Speech Language
Hearing Association changed the requirements for
stuttering training in the graduate schools.

They no longer required classes or supervised
training in stuttering therapy. The graduate
schools complained that they werent able to find
enough stutterers for their clinics. They
also could not hire enough professors to teach
the stuttering classes. As a result, now, a
student can graduate and obtain a license in
Speech Pathology without any classes or training
in stuttering. Studies have shown that the
majority of speech pathologists in public schools
feel uncomfortable assessing and treating
children who stutter.

They feel inadequately prepared when they are
mandated to treat a child who stutters. It is
not their fault that graduate schools agreed to
provide inadequate training in stuttering. They
suffer the consequences when they are forced to
treat children who stutter without proper skills
in public schools. At about this same time I
and a few other stuttering experts decided to
start a Special Interest Division in Fluency and
Fluency Disorders. After several years, we
devised a Specialization Program that required
advanced training and experience in stuttering,
regulated by mentors who certified successful
candidates as Board Certified Specialists in
Fluency (BCS-F) Fluency Specialists.

How to find a fluency

There are now about 160 Board Certified Fluency
Specialists in the United States. I was a member
of the initial cadre that devised the standards
for specialization and was recognized as a Board
Certified Specialist in 2001. A new organization
was formed to monitor this process, the American
Board of Fluency and Fluency Disorders. Their
website provides a search engine to identify
local specialists by state or name and can be

Board-Certified Specialist in your area, you
might contact a Specialist nearby who may know
colleagues in your area who treat stuttering or
