  • Now that you have made a decision to have dental
implants, you may be experiencing a little
apprehension about what the process will involve.
Relax, it is not as complicated as you may think,
millions of people all over the world go for a
dental implant procedure and they have good
results to show for it. Read on to find out more
    about the dental implant process.

3
  • The main steps of the dental implant process
  • X-rays The dentist will require x-rays for
    prognostic and evaluative purposes. Panoramic
x-rays, x-rays and 3D CT scan will be required to
determine bone and gum condition and to identify
    any kinds of warnings.

4
  • Impressions Your dentist will take an impression
on your mouth which will help in providing a good
replica of the teeth, gums and the surrounding
tissues. The dentist will determine the right
sized metal impression tray and fill it with
alginate or polyvinyl siloxane. You will be
required to bite down on the U-shaped plastic or
metal impression tray. Once that is done, the tray
will be removed and sent to the lab for
    processing.

5
  • Tooth Extraction if the troublesome tooth still
exists, it will need to be extracted. This can
happen at the same time as implant insertion.
Expect your dentist to explain what type of
anesthesia he/she will be using. Usually it is a
local injection of licodaine or Novocaine. It
doesnt take long to pull a tooth but if the
tooth is fractured, the dentist will be cautious.
You can expect to feel a little tugging and
pressure as the dentist wiggles the tooth out.

6
  • Implant After tooth extraction, the Dental
Implant Dentist in Staten Island will drill a
hole in your jawbone this feels similar to
having a cavity drilled. In some of the cases,
the dentist will have to make an incision in the
gum to expose the bone and in this case you can
expect to have stiches. The dentist places the
implant deep in the jawbone, this serves as an
artificial root for the new tooth. The whole
appointment will take up to two hours at most.

7
  • Abutment placement As your jawbone heals it
will fuse with the implant. This process can take
weeks or months. Once your dentist declares that
the implant is stable, an abutment will be placed
on top of it to act as a connector to the crown.

8
  • Permanent crown Finally the permanent crown is
attached to the abutment and you are done with
    the dental implant procedure.
