Title: What are the risks and complications of blood transfusion?

1
What are the risks and complications of blood
transfusion?
2
Blood transfusion is a medical technique using
which donated blood is given to a patient with
the help of narrow tubes that are connected to
the veins. This technique is potentially a
life-saver for patients involved in serious
accidents and can help replace the loss of blood.
This process can also help prevents the body from
illness by helping in making blood or some of its
components.
3
The blood is made up of several different
components like red blood cells and white blood
cells, plasma, and platelets. In some rare cases,
the patient may need blood transfusion that uses
all components of the blood, but the chances of
the patient requiring a particular component are
more.
4
  • Each component of blood perform a certain role
    which are as follows
  • Red Blood Cells carry oxygen and help remove
    waste products from the body
  • White Blood Cells help the body fight infections
and function as the immunity system of the body
  • Plasma is the liquid part of your blood
  • Platelets help your blood clot properly during
    any injury

5
In most cases blood transfusions happen very
smoothly. However there may be situations where
mild problems occur which can be treated using
blood transfusion medicine. Some of the
problems that can be faced by the patients
include
6
Allergic Reactions Some patients may suffer
from an allergic reactions to the blood being
used during the transfusion process. They can be
mild or severe and differs from patient to
patient depending on how their body reacts to the
new blood. Some of the symptoms are -
Anxiety- Pain in the chest- Trouble breathing-
Fever, chills, flushing, and clammy skin- A
quick pulse or low blood pressure- Nausea
(feeling sick to the stomach)
7
Viruses and Infectious Diseases Some diseases
like HIV are transmitted through blood and end up
infecting the person receiving the blood
transfusion. To keep blood safe, blood banks in
Gurgaon carefully screen donated blood.
8
Fever It is possible that the patient may get
a sudden fever during or within a few hours of
blood transfusion. This happens due to the bodys
reaction to white blood cells.
9
Iron Overload People which require multiple
transfusions during a short span of time, are
more prone to build up iron overload in the
blood. Overload of iron can impact the liver,
heart etc.
10
Acute Immune Hemolytic Reaction This is a
serious, but also very rare disease which happens
in case if the blood type the patient gets during
transfusion doesn't match the blood type.
11
Delayed Hemolytic Reaction This is quite
similar to the above but happens at a much slower
pace. The body starts destroying red blood cells
but at a very slow pace so much so that it may go
unnoticed and eventually lead to a bigger
trouble.
12
The probability of these risks is quite low as
blood banks in Gurgaon separate white blood cells
from to the whole blood which prevents the
possibility of white blood cells attacking the
organs and thereby complicating the transfusion.
It is important to note that any symptoms should
be immediately reported to the doctors who may
suggest Blood transfusion medicine to cope with
the symptoms. Another key aspect is to visit
and recommend only best hospital in Gurgaon for
the transfusion services to prevent or lower the
risk associated with blood transfusion
