4 Tips for Parenting College Students

3College life is a great experience for many
students, and for parents as well. For students,
its their first time being away from home and
living on their own. Nevertheless, the best four
years of their lives can have a bumpy start.
Some will be overwhelmed by being away from the
support system they had back home and by the
pressures of their coursework, says Yagana Shah
in her article, 5 Things Parents Can Do To Help
Their Homesick College Students. That said,
here are parenting tips to help your student
thrive in college and cope with homesickness
while away from home.
41. Stay positive with them. You might be having
as hard of a time as your child getting used to
your new life, but dont tell them how much you
miss them and how boring and quiet the house is
without them. This will only make them feel
guilty for moving away or give them an excuse to
vacate their loft apartment near ucf and come
back to your home. But instead, stay positive
with them, no matter how lonely it feels. Keep
yourself busy, this is also an opportunity for
you to grow. 2. Text more and limit your
call. Hearing your voice more often over the
phone might be comforting, but it might also make
them miss you more and only aggravate their
homesickness. Missing you is part of the
process, but bear in mind that the whole point of
college is for them to be independent and to
spread their wings. Texting allows you to be
there for them for a quick chat or a fast
check-in, but without an overly emotional
connection.
53. Visit them instead of asking them to come home
often. Chances are they will miss the comforts
of living at home with you and being around all
their friends. However, them keep coming home for
quick visits will make them miss you even more.
So, it might be best if you visit them in their
student apartments so you can spend time
together. When saying goodbye, go your separate
ways in the evening so it doesnt break their
routine. Encourage them to stay fit, join a club
to meet new friends or find a regular hobby to
take part in. 4. Send a care
package. Theres nothing more comforting like
getting a box full of useful and familiar things
when they cant be at home. Send them stuff that
they might have forgotten to stock up on such as-
their favorite study snacks, some coffee for
those late nights, a new pair of shoes and a
jacket, or their favorite shampoo, and a little
note of encouragement can go a long way.
