2Introduction
- Cracking the most formidable examination in the
country requires systematic planning followed by
a disciplined regime. Most of the successful
aspirants have required 3-4 attempts to clear
this Titanic exam. Most of the future IAS
aspirants are curious to know the answers to the
following questions - What is IAS Exam and if he/she is a prospective
Candidate? - What is the exam pattern and how is it
evaluated? - What are the careers post my selection to the
civil services exam? - Where can I get study material for the UPSC

3UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) India's
entrusted agency holds the responsibility of
conduction of the Civil Services Examination
(CSE).It intends to recruit candidates to top
government services like IAS(Indian
Administrative Services), IPS(Indian Police
Services, and IFS(Indian foreign Services)
besides others
4ELIGIBILITY FOR THE UPSC EXAM
Educational Qualification Candidate applying for
the Civil Services 2019 exam is required to
fulfil the following criteria Candidate must
hold a Bachelor's Degree from any of the
recognized universities Candidates who have
appeared for the qualifying examination and are
awaiting results or those who are yet to appear
for the qualifying examination are also eligible
for the Preliminary Examination. Such candidates
have to produce proof of passing the said
examination along with the application for the
Main Examination Candidates with professional and
technical qualifications recognized by the
Government or its equivalent are also eligible to
apply Candidates who have passed the final year
of MBBS or any Medical Examination but are yet to
complete the internship can also appear for the
Main Examination. However, they must submit a
certificate from the concerned University that
they have passed the final professional medical
examination.
5ELIGIBILITY FOR THE UPSC EXAM
Age Limit A candidate should be minimum of 21
years and maximum 32 years old as on August 01,
2019. But he/she must have been born not earlier
than August 02, 1987 and not later than August
01, 1998. Number of attempts Restriction on the
maximum number of attempts is effective since
1984 For General Candidates 7 attempts (Up to
32 Years) Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe
Candidates (SC/ST) No Limits (Up to 37 Years)
Other Backward Classes (OBC) 9 attempts (Up to
35 Years) Physically handicapped- 9 attempts
6PATTERN OF UPSC EXAM
- The UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) consists of 3
stages which are - Preliminary Exam The pattern of the exam is
objective type questionsIt consists of two
papers, - Paper 1 deals with general studies and contains
100 questions. Paper 2 is of aptitude test and
contains 80 questions. Paper 2 is only of
qualifying nature (67 marks for
qualifying).Approximately 12 times the total
number of vacancies qualify this exam to be
eligible to appear in the next stage. Marks
obtained in prelims are not counted for final
merit.
7PATTERN OF UPSC EXAM
- Main Exam The Civil Services Mains examination
aims to test the academic talent and the ability
of the candidate to present the answers in a
clear and coherent manner. The detailed
Examination is targeted to access the overall
understanding of the concepts and intellectual
traits rather than merely checking their memory.
The written examination consists of nine papers,
two qualifying and seven rankings in nature. The
range of questions may vary from just one mark to
sixty marks, twenty words to 600 words answers. - Interview The interview is personality based and
candidates who pass qualifying papers are ranked
according to marks and a selected number of
candidates are called for an interview or a
personality test at the Commission's discretion.
