Importance of Basic and Acid Dyes
  • Dyes or colors are very much relevant in
the textile dyes manufacturing industry. Amongst
    several classifications,
  • the classification based on pH value term them
as acid dyes and basic dyes.
  • Lets understand their characteristics and
    importance.

4
Basic dyes
  • These dyes are cationic which means they have a
positive charge. Since they show the typical
properties of a base, they are known as basic
    dyes.
  • Since the basic dyes show a positive charge, they
get stuck to every fabric. It is the reason they
stain everything they touch during the
    processing.
  •
  • Even the plastic and silicone sealants also get
    the color.
  •
  • Due to the positive charge, the dye attracts to
proteins and nucleic acid in the body. Hence,
they are used as a biological stain. However, it
is hazardous to the health also.

Usage and importance of basic dyes
  • The basic dyes include all synthetic textile
dyes. They are historically significant, and
because of their ability to stain and bind
different parts of human cell, the basic dyes are
    used in the medicines.
  • The basic dyes can color any fabric, natural or
synthetic. However, with the natural fibers, they
show poor light fastness. It restricts the use of
    basic dyes in versatile applications.
  • The introduction of acrylic fibers made them
relevant. On the acrylic fibers, they show a
    reasonably good life fastness.
  • It is quite apparent that the use of basic dyes
is not recommended for hand dying because of
their affinity to proteins. The long-term use can
    cause serious health hazards.

6
Usage and importance of basic dyes
  • Acid dyes are based on salts of phenolic,
sulfuric or carboxylic acids. The dyes are
soluble in water and show an affinity towards all
types of fibers. The pH value of them lies
    between two and five.
  • Since they are highly water soluble, the light
fastness of acid dye is better than basic dye.
They are appropriate for all natural and
    synthetic fibers.
  • Acid dyes are negatively charged, and they are
divided into two groups acid-leveling and
acid-milling. The chemical structure of these
dyes is made from large aromatic molecules with a
sulphonyl or amino group that makes them soluble
    in water.

7
Properties of acid dyes
  • The dyes form a large anion when they dissolve in
water. They are ideal for dying silk, wool,
    polyamide, and acrylics.
  • Their pH value ranges from extreme acidic to
neutral.  Acid dyes are not suitable for dying
cotton fabric as they dont show any affinity to
    cotton cellulose.
