3If youre thinking about pursuing gestational
surrogacy as a way to start a family or are
considering donating your eggs to help another
individual, youve likely got lots of questions
about the egg donation process. This is a key
step in the path to gestational surrogacy. It
generally involves a final screening, cycle
synchronization, egg production and harvesting,
ending with compensation. Most egg donation
agencies follow these steps Screening
Although you will undergo several blood tests
in egg donation the final screening involves
testing for infectious and genetic diseases.
These are necessary requirements of the FDA which
must be performed within a short duration prior
to using your eggs.

5Cycle Preparation This step involves harmonizing
your cycle with the recipient or donor. In order
to do so, medications are administered to
temporarily arrest your ovulation. You will begin
taking birth control pills from your next
menstrual cycle. You will also begin taking
medications such as Lupron which must be
injected. A doctor or nurse will discuss how to
self-administer and the side effects that you may
likely experience. Common side effects include
breast tenderness, hot flashes, irritability,
mood swings and bloating. These side effects will
end once you stop these medications. You will
have to also come into office for a blood test
and ultrasound. This step will take up to three
weeks. Egg Production Once its confirmed that
your cycle is suppressed, you will start on a
different course of hormones and medications in
order to encourage egg production. You will need
to inject this med twice a day for up to two
weeks.
6In this period, you will be expected to attend
brief appointments for further blood testing and
ultrasounds. This is performed to monitor your
bodys response to the hormones and medications.
You must abstain from intercourse at this
time. A majority of women respond well to these
hormones and medications. Some may experience
some soreness, redness and bruising at the site
where the needle is inserted. You may experience
side effects such as insomnia, irritability,
headaches, tenderness and abdominal fullness.
Ovarian hyper stimulation is a rare occurrence
which is a serious side effect. It causes the
ovaries to swell up and retain water. It is
however treatable. Egg Donation Once youve
completed the course of medications, your eggs
will be retrieved from the ovaries via an
ultra-sound guided procedure. This can last up to
thirty minutes and is performed under mild
sedation by the anaesthesiologist. You will be
aware during the egg donation process. You will
require a friend or family member to drive you
home to rest after completing the procedure.
