Title: Adulteration in commercial pet food
1 Adulteration in commercial pet food
2Adulteration
- Adulteration refers to addition of deleterious or
harmful substances with food or drink in order to
increase the quantity and make profits. Even the
pet industry is not spared and some of the most
expensive brands often contain carcinogenic and
inflammatory additives which are harmful for
pets. - Regulations have been made by many countries to
check adulteration in human as well as animal
food. Lets see what these harmful ingredients
used in pet food industry are and the regulations
for pet food manufacturers in India.
3Effect On Pets
- Many pet food companies add a host of chemicals,
preservatives and other dangerous items to their
product. Upon consumption, pets may face some
serious health problems like liver damage,
cancer, skin irritation, kidney damage,
haemorrhages and thyroid damage. - For example, Red dye 40 is a chemical added in
order to give colour to pet foods. It was found
that pets have shown hyperactivity, inattention
and impulsiveness after eating food coated with
such chemicals.
4Harmful Pet Food Adulterants
- Rendered fat Fat obtained from livestocks that
are dead, diseased, or dying are often rendered
and used in pet food. They are listed in the
ingredient label as meat and bone meal
(MBM).Bisphenol A (BPA)BPA is a synthetic
chemical which is used to make plastics and epoxy
resins. Epoxy resins containing BPA are usually
used to line the inside of pet food
cans.Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)BHA is a
synthetic antioxidant which is added to pet foods
to prevent fat from becoming rancid. This
synthetic has been shown to cause cancer in the
pets.CarrageenanIt is a stabilizer, thickener,
and texturizer which is found in many pet food
products. Research has shown that it causes
gastrointestinal inflammation and intestinal
ulcerations in pets.
5Menu Foods-Case Study
- In 2007, a well known pet food manufacturing
company in the USA called Menu Foods Inc. had to
recall several brands of their pet food. This
food was produced on site. The issue was the
wheat gluten added in these foods came from a
Chinese company. It was found that the gluten
contained melamine, an industrial chemical used
for making plastics. - The Food and drug investigation (FDA) received
more than 10,000 complaints and were notified of
at least 14 deaths. The FDA stepped in to
investigate, ultimately tracing the food to the
Menu plant in Canada. Two Chinese companies and
their owners who were responsible for
adulteration got indicted in the U.S. federal
court. Menu Foods Inc. was later purchased by
Simmons Pet Food in 2010.
6Regulations in India
- Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
(FSSAI) is an autonomous body formed under the
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. - FSSAI regulates human and animal food
manufacturing, storage, distribution and sales to
ensure safe and wholesome food for consumption.
Every food manufacturer should have an FSSAI
registration/license so they are under compliance
with the FSS Act.
