How to Learn a New Language

Instructions for use
  • Learning a new language may seem like a
challenging feat that is difficult to start. An
entire language of sounds and dialect that are at
    first indecipherable, can be incredibly
overwhelming. However, approaching this task the
right way can help you achieve fluency quickly
and efficiently. The first step is picking a
language that works for you and what you want to
accomplish. Choose a language that you will be
able to use once in a while or that has some
    relevance to you.
  • For example, if you are of Italian descent,
choose to learn Italian to communicate with
relatives. Or go with a language that is
prevalent in your area and can be used in the
community. Spanish is a great example of a
prevalent language across the US. On the other
hand, deciding on a language like Yiddish may not
be of very much use to you, as it is considered
an endangered language throughout the world. The
next step is setting attainable goals for
    yourself.

3
  • If you are planning on traveling to the country
that speaks your new language, it is unrealistic
to expect fluency within a month before your
trip. Understand that fluency in another language
will take time, persistence, and patience.

4
  • Nothing is going to happen over night. Once you
have decided upon your language and set goals for
yourself, you need to choose a way of learning
that language. There are a lot of different
options out there but very few of them will be
free, so you should be willing to invest a little
bit of money into your new interest. It is also
important to note which method will be most
effective for you. For more complex languages,
like Japanese for example, you may be better off
hiring a Japanese tutor rather than trying to
teach yourself from an app on your phone.

5
  • After choosing your method, the next step is to
learn the basic pronunciation, vocabulary and
grammar tutor of the language. Most instructional
methods for languages will lay out some sort of
curriculum for you to follow, so this step will
be easy. It is the first big part in actually
mastering a language. Once you have a solid grasp
on that, you must practice, practice, practice!
When learning French, I found that I came to a
standstill in my studies because I had mastered
the basics using a virtual program, but I really
didn't have anyone to practice with. Conversation
is probably the biggest part of any language. You
may establish expertise in writing or reading in
your new language, but holding a conversation
with someone can be entirely different, as it
requires speed and fluency. I ended up hiring a
French tutor to continue my studies, strictly so
I could practice my speaking skills. Lacking
friends or family who can speak the language you
choose can pose a problem, so finding someone to
conversate with is necessary to advance to the
    next level.

6
  • Once you have mastered the art of conversation in
your new language, test yourself. Seek out games
or quizzes online to test your knowledge. You may
even want to take a standardized test in which
the results can help prove your level of the
language to schools, employers, friends, etc. The
    Communication Abilities Diagnostic Test (CADeT)
is a popular test that can prove your abilities
to speak, read, and write in your new language.

7
  • There are a lot of really great tutors for tests
like these if you wanted to go the extra step to
ensure you pass. No one is motivated to learn
when they are miserable doing it. You can make it
fun by learning about the culture. If you can
afford it, try and go to the country in which
they speak your new language to completely
immerse yourself in it. There, you will get real
life practice and have an amazing experience
while doing so. Learning a new language can be
incredibly useful and enriching to your life. If
you follow the steps above, you will be bilingual
(maybe even trilingual) before you know it!
