Title: Sedation Options for Nervous Patients

1
Different Types of Sedation Dentistry
2
Introduction
  • Sedation dentistry refers to the use of
medications to calm and relax a patient prior to
    and during a dental appointment.
  • Sedation dentistry is beneficial for both the
    patient and the dentist.
  • Benefits of sedation dentistry include patient
    relaxation, increased comfort, movement control,
control of gag reflex and many more.
  • If you are fearful or nervous about dental
procedures and avoid dentists just because of the
sheer fear of pain or anxiety, then sedation
dentistry is the only way for you to get the
dental care to improve your oral health.

Sedation Options for Nervous Patients
  • Nitrous Oxide or commonly known as laughing gas.
This is used for relaxation and to reduce
anxiety. The amount of sedation received is
controlled by your dentist. Gas can wear off
quickly, and you can ever drive yourself home
    after the procedure.
  • Oral Sedation is beneficial for patients with
minimum to moderate anxiety. Common drugs used
for this sedation are Valium, Halcion, Sonata,
and Ativan. You will be awake throughout the
procedure, but your senses will be dulled.
Medication is provided prior to the treatment
which helps in reducing memory or the sights and
    smells of the dental office.

Sedation Options for Nervous Patients
  • IV Moderate Sedation is beneficial for patients
with acute anxiety who otherwise wont be able to
receive dental treatment. It is often used for
wisdom teeth or other complicated extractions.
Sedative medication is delivered through a small
needle or catheter placed in a vein. You will be
awake during the procedure. However, you will
have trouble recalling anything about it later
    on.
  • Deep Sedation and General Anesthesia. This
sedation option is used for people with severe
anxiety, with a significant gag reflex, and for
children who need to have extensive work done.
You will be unconscious during the procedure and
cannot easily be awakened until the effects of
    the anesthesia wear off.
