Title: Biometric Face Recognition System: How It Works?
1Biometric Face Recognition System How It Works?
2Biometric face recognition system is one of the
fastest and least intrusive technology to
implement. It works with the most easiest and
obvious identifier - the face. Employees are not
required to place their hand or finger on a
scanner a system unacceptable in some
cultures. The idea of placing ones eye in a
precise position while it gets scanned is not too
appealing either. This is why a face recognition
system is becoming so popular. There is
absolutely no delay or intrusion during the
scanning. In fact, most people are unaware that
they are being scanned.
3How does this technology work?
Biometric Face Recognition System works by
analysing the features of a persons face which
are input via a digital camera. Features such as
distances between the nose, eyes, jaw edges and
mouth as well as overall facial structure are
measured. Each face has many landmarks and
distinguishable characteristics that make up a
persons facial features. The human face has
around eighty nodal points. Facial recognition
technology measures the following - Nose
width - Distance between your eyes - Depth of
your eye sockets - Length of your jaw
line - Shape of your cheekbones
4A numerical code is given to each measurement,
called a face print. This code represents your
face. When these measurements are obtained,
they are saved in a database and used as a basis
for comparison whenever that particular
individual stands in front of the camera. Due
to its seamless method of operation, it is not
surprising that biometric facial recognition is
quickly overtaking fingerprint authentication.
5How will users interact with this system?
Biometric Systems operate via a four stage
process. This involves 1) Capture - A
behavioural or physical sample is obtained during
the enrolment process 2) Extraction - Your
unique data is mined from the sample and a
template is recorded 3) Comparison - The
template is compared with the new sample (each
time you stand in front of the system) 4)
Matching - The system will decide whether the
extracted features in the new sample match those
in the database.
6During this process, the user stands
approximately two feet away from the camera. The
Biometric System attempts to locate this users
face and matches it to the claimed identity in
the database. The user may be required to adjust
his or her movement in order to re-attempt
verification. The system provides a decision
within five seconds.
7Where is biometric facial recognition technology
being used?
Currently, it is being considered as a potential
tool for stopping terrorist activities. It is
already used in law enforcement domains. Many
automated banks and computer network rely on
facial recognition for verification purposes.
This technology is also useful in high traffic
areas such as - Government offices - Stadiums -
Corporations - Railway stations - Airports - Cashp
oints - Corporations - Financial institutions
8Why is facial recognition gaining so much
momentum?
One of its leading benefits is that it is a
non-intrusive method for identification and
verification. Both are accomplished when the user
stands just two feet away. Facial recognition
technology is also difficult to manipulate
because the landmarks and special features on a
persons face are difficult mimic or conceal,
even with a wig, makeup eyeglasses or a beard.
