What is ovulation? Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation (1)

Description:

An ovulation symptom most commonly observed is a change in body temperature. It drops slightly before ovulation and spikes again after it. Another quite common sign is a constant lower abdominal pain. What is ovulation?
  • Ovulation is the point in your menstrual cycle at
which a mature egg is released from the ovary,
thus setting the stage for fertilization. During
ovulation, the egg travels down the fallopian
tube, where it may meet up with a sperm and get
fertilized. For most healthy women, ovulation
generally happens once a month and a few weeks
    after menstruation begins.

3
When are you fertile?
  • You are fertile for the five days leading up to
ovulation, apart from the day of ovulation
itself. You are most fertile two days prior to
ovulation. You have a better chance of conceiving
in these two days than you do on the day of
    ovulation itself.

4
Signs and symptoms of ovulation
  • 1. Changes in body temperature As you get closer
to ovulation, theres a slight dip in the basal
body temperature followed by a sharp increase,
typically of about 0.4 to 1.0 degrees, just after
    ovulation.

5
Comparison
  • 2. Ovulation pain or mittelschmerz - The most
uncomfortable ovulation symptom for some women is
ovulation pain or mittelschmerz, a German word
meaning mid (mittel) pain (schmerz). Ovulation
for these women causes a sudden and constant pain
    in their lower abdomen.
  • 3. Heightened sense of smell For some women, a
more sensitive sense of smell in the latter half
of a normal enstruation cycle can signal
    ovulation.

6
Comparison
  • Cervical mucus - Observing your cervical mucus
regularly is important, as it is one of the more
reliable ovulation symptoms. Your mucus changes
in response to the different stages of fertility
    in your cycle.
  • Nausea and Headaches While not everyone has
these symptoms, some women may experience
headaches or nausea during ovulation because of
the sharp and rapid changes in their sex hormone
levels. For women with good hormonal balance,
these unpleasant symptoms arent as likely.
