Globe Rupture
  • Globe Rupture is a very disturbed state of the
total outer portion of an eye's membrane which is
caused by any blunt object or penetrating trauma.
It is the damaged state of the globe or
eyeball. An open globe injury can disrupt cornea
or sclera, or both. This is known as one of the
most serious eye injuries. This disease differs
from blunt trauma to penetrating trauma, each
having its consequences. It is an ophthalmologic
condition of the eye which requires immediate
treatment by an ophthalmologist, as this injury
can lead to a high frequency of visual loss and
can be very painful to the eye.Though, the eye
can be treated with the help of modern diagnostic
    techniques, surgical approaches and
    rehabilitation.

Causes of Globe Rupture
  • Globe rupture is any full-thickness injury to
the sclera, cornea or both which can be caused
    by
  • Penetrating or blunt trauma.
  • Penetrating injuries by scissors, knives, sticks,
    nails, etc.
  • Damage which is caused by chemicals, like strong
    acids or industrial chemicals.
  • Eye injuries which mostly occur in sports, like
    baseball, basketball, martial arts, wrestling,
    etc.

4
Risks related to Globe Rupture
  • Some common risks of globe rupture
    areInfection
  • Postoperative endophthalmitis
  • Exogenous endophthalmitis

5
Prevention
  • Following are some of the measures that can be
    used to prevent globe rupture
  • Wear protective eyewear while using lawn-care or
    metalworking equipments.
  • Carry protective glass shields at the time of
    doing industrial work.

6
How is Globe Rupture diagnosed?
  • Globe rupture can be diagnosed by physical
examination. This examination is done very
    carefully.
  • Visual Activity Test
  • Ultrasonography
  • Orbital Crepitus

7
Symptoms of Globe Rupture
  • Most common symptoms of this problem are as
    follows
  • Pain.
  • Loss of vision or blurred vision.
  • Diplopia.

How is Globe Rupture treated?
  • Before taking to the hospital - Globe Rupture is
a very serious condition. It should be treated
under the guidance of an ophthalmologist, but
some before-hospital care steps should be ensured
    while transporting the patient.
  • Non-ophthalmologists - Often it is treated by
    non-ophthalmologists. This involves corneal
abrasions and also chemical splashes.  If the
globe rupture is not very serious, then it
requires immediate ophthalmological care. Most of
the times, surgeons prefer to have intraocular
lens implantation. Also, antibiotics can be taken
    to prevent any eye loss.
  • Fox Shield - A fox shield is putted over the
affected area for the treatment of this problem.
Polystyrene foam cup can also be taken instead of
the fox shield. Any kind of eye manipulation is
avoided during the treatment, as it may raise the
pressure of intraocular contents with potential
    extrusions.
