4Healthcare ethics, also known as 'medical
ethics' or 'bioethics', in simplest form, are
the beliefs and values that guide us in making
choices about medical care
5Healthcare Ethics in Rural India
- And, The First Hospitals' Di?erence
05
Humanity without ethics perishes. We need to live
by a code and all the professions and practices
must adhere to certain moral ethics that benefits
everyone. Medical profession in India and allover
the world, is considered as a noble
profession. Healthcare ethics, also known as
'medical ethics' or 'bioethics', in simplest
form, are the beliefs and values that guide us
in making choices about medical care
Doctors and the other medical professionals are
the brand ambassadors of health. Especially,
doctors are considered and regarded as next to
God in India and we could see many examples that
strengthen this notion. Due to limited access to
quality clinicians, healthcare facilities for
specialized services, rural healthcare ethics
are being influenced at various levels. In
addition, due to the geographical and climatic
barriers as well as heightened social, cultural,
and economic challenges, availing the care that
is bound by ethical practices is not a common
scene.
Dr. M V Annalarasi MBBS, PGDM(HCM) Medical
Admin Medical profession was, is and will be a
noble profession. The suflx 'Dr' is given only
to doctors. This is to respect the people who are
in this noble field and diuerentiate themselves
from the rest. Honouring this, First Hospital is
bound to follow medical ethics at all stages
involved in patient care.
6Rural Characteristics In?uencing Ethics Issues
We, as a team, educate the patient and his or
relatives about the course of action and the
probable outcome in a detailed manner and follow
only the actions that benefit the patient's
health at a greater level.
- Limited economic resources
- Reduced health status
- Limited availability and accessibility of
healthcare services - Cultural and personal values
The following 4 principles are the universally
perceived ethical practices and we at First Hos-
pitals follow them with integrity.
Medical or healthcare ethics are a set of moral
principles that apply value to the medical
practice. Believing this fact, we at First Hospi-
tals, are bound to ethical practices, accessing
the quality medical care to the rural public.
- Autonomy to honor the patients right to make
their own decision - Beneficence to help the patient advance his/her
own good - Nonmaleficence to do no harm
- Justice to be fair and treat like cases alike
The Core Principles of Healthcare Ethics at
First Hospitals
Our ethical responsibilities in a given situation
depend in part on the nature of the decision
and in part on the roles we play.
All these 4 principles are considered to be in
euect at all times. In theory, each is of equal
weight or importance.
Pushpalatha M Head - Clinical Quality
Training At the core of healthcare, ethics are
the basic sense of right and wrong and our
beliefs about rights we possess and duties we owe
to the patients. At First Hospitals, thinking
carefully about the ethical aspects of healthcare
decisions helps us make the choices that are
right, good, fair and just.
7Lack of facilities and quali- ty medical care
providers, it is wise to focus on pre- ventive
measures that help the population in completely
avoiding the disease.
84 Common Health Diseases Found in Rural India
during Monsoon
08
India is the second most populous country in the
world and most of this population lives in rural
areas. As the country is still categorized as
'still-developing coun- try' the quality and
standard of living in rural India seek a lot of
improvements in numerous ways, education, health,
transportation and housing, to be
accurate. Especially, healthcare demands a
significant improvement in rural India. The lack
of facilities and quality medical care
providers, it is wise to focus on preventive
measures that help the population in completely
avoiding the disease.
9As per the recent survey con- ducted by the
Ministry of Rural Health in India, the following
diseases are prevailing in the rural
parts. Malaria The rural populace in India is
prone to get Malaria due to lack of proper
sanitation, poor hygiene and living stand- ards.
Malaria, often regarded as the most common
disease found in the developing countries, auect
most of the coun- try during the monsoon season
as the weather during monsoon is ideal for
mosquito larva harvesting. Typhoid Typhoid fever
is an acute, systemic infection presenting as
fever with abdominal symptoms, caused by
Salmonella typhi and paratyphi. The organisms
are acquired via inges- tion of food or water,
contaminated with human excreta from infected
persons. Jaundice Jaundice, also known as
icterus, is a condition, which is characterized
by yellowish discolouration of the skin and
whites of eyes. It is a symptom or clinical sign,
not a disease by itself. The yellow colouration
is caused by an excess amount of bile pigment
known as bilirubin in the body. Normally,
bilirubin is formed by the breakdown of
haemoglobin during the destruction of worn-out
red blood cells. Diarrhoea Diarrhoea is a major
public health problem in developing countries.
Diarrhoeal diseases cause a heavy economic
burden on health services. About 15 per cent of
all pediat- ric beds in India are occupied by
admissions due to gastro- enteritis. In India,
diarrhoeal diseases are a major public health
problem among children under the age of 5 years.
