Does isotonic solution cause osmosis?
No. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a
semipermeable membrane. Isotonic refers to the
situation where water on both sides of the
membrane has the same concentration of solvents.
In this case, there are an equal number of water
molecules moving across the membrane so there is
not net change in the amount of water on either
side. Osmosis, as a form of diffusion, occurs
when there are unequal concentrations of solvents
on the opposite sides of the membrane. The side
with the most solutes has less water per unit
volume compared to the side with fewer solutes.
Water on the dilute side will move from the side
where it is in greater concentration to the side
where it is in lower concentration. These are
known as hypertonic (more solvents, less water)
and hypotonic (less solvent, more water)
solutions. One last thing, any one solution is
neither iso-, hyper-, or hypotonic. These are
relative terms so there need to be two solutions
to compare.
