Title: Top 7 Cloud Computing Companies in 2018 (1)
1Top 7 Cloud Computing Companies in 2018
AWS and Microsoft dominate, but they aren't the
only players in the IaaS and PaaS markets.
2Cloud computing revenues continue to climb at
astonishing rates, and all the leading cloud
vendors are capitalizing on that trend. Synergy
Research Group recently released its quarterly
analysis of the infrastructure as a service
(IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and hosted
private cloud market, which reported that
quarterly revenues climbed 51 percent in the
first quarter of 2018. That's notably higher then
the 44 percent growth rate that the cloud
computing market experienced in 2017. Cloud
growth in the last two quarters really has been
quite exceptional, stated John Dinsdale, a chief
analyst and research director at Synergy Research
Group. Normal market development cycles and the
law of large numbers should result in growth
rates that slowly diminish and that is what we
saw in late 2016 and through most of 2017. But
the growth rate jumped by three percentage points
in Q4 and by another five in Q1. That is good
news for the leading cloud providers, whose
historically high levels of capex are helping to
ensure that they are the main beneficiaries of
that exceptional market growth. Within the
cloud computing market, some cloud companies are
growing much faster than others. While the same
four companies still lead in the space, some new
contenders farther down the list are growing very
rapidly. The following slides take a closer look
at the top seven cloud computing companies in the
IaaS, PaaS and hosted private cloud markets,
based on Synergy Research data and their own
quarterly financial reports.
31. Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has long dominated the
cloud computing market, and that didn't change in
the most recent quarter. In its quarterly
earnings statement, Amazon said that its cloud
computing division brought in 5.44 billion in
revenue, a 49 percent year-over-year
increase. According to Synergy, the vendor
captured 33 percent of the total market, more
than its next four competitors combined. The
Synergy release noted, "AWS worldwide market
share has held steady at around 33 percent for
twelve quarters now, even as the market has
almost tripled in size." That's a noteworthy
achievement for such a large player in the
market. However, some of AWS's smaller
competitors are growing even more quickly than
the cloud giant.
42. Microsoft Azure
In its most recent quarterly filing, Microsoft
reported that it's Microsoft Azure revenue
climbed 93 percent, significantly more than
Amazon's did. Overall, the company said that it
had 6.0 billion in cloud computing revenue
however, this includes software as a service
(SaaS) sales. Considering just IaaS, PaaS and
hosted private cloud sales, Microsoft accounted
for 13 percent of the market, according to
Synergy Research. That puts it solidly in second
place behind AWS and well ahead of its next
competitor. The company has big plans for Azure
in the future. In his keynote address at
Microsoft's 2018 Build developers conference, CEO
Satya Nadella proclaimed, "Azure is being built
as the world's computer," and he announced a
number of new features and services planned for
the business unit.
53. IBM
While some researchers consider Google the third
largest cloud computing company, Synergy says
that title actually belongs to IBM in the IaaS,
PaaS and hosted private cloud segment. According
to Dinsdale, "IBM market share has been
relatively stable at around 8, thanks primarily
to its strong leadership in hosted private cloud
services." In its financial reports for the
first quarter of 2018, IBM said that its IBM
Cloud revenue increased 20 percent
year-over-year, which is significant, but not as
impressive as Microsoft's and Amazon's gains. It
also noted that over the past 12 months, the
company has generated 17.7 billion in cloud
revenue, and its "as a service" business is now
on a 10.7 billion annual run rate.
64. Google Cloud
According to Synergy, Google Cloud has been
increasing its market share and now controls 6
percent of the market. Earlier this year, Google
CEO Sundar Pichai said that Google Cloud, which
includes the G Suite SaaS as well as its cloud
platform, was "already a billion-dollar-per-quarte
r business." He added, "In fact, we believe that
Google Cloud Platform, based on publicly reported
data for the twelve months ended December 2017,
is the fastest growing major public cloud
provider in the world." Still, those cloud
revenues pail in comparison to Google's other
businesses. Parent company Alphabet generated
32.3 billion in total revenue for the quarter,
including 27 billion from advertising.
75. Alibaba
The fifth largest cloud computing company in the
world is not very well known to Americans but is
very well known in Asia. Alibaba is a China-based
technology firm with a strong e-commerce
presence. In its most recent quarterly report,
Alibaba announced cloud revenues of 553 million,
a 104 percent year-over-year increase. Synergy's
Dinsdale said that these earnings were enough to
give Alibaba a 4 percent share of the IaaS, PaaS
and hosted private cloud market. Overall, the
company's quarterly revenues increased 56 percent
to reach 83.03 billion yuan (13.19 billion).
86. Salesforce
Although best known for its SaaS offerings,
Salesforce also has a sizable PaaS presence
through offerings like Lightning Builders,
Heroku, mySalesforce and others. In its most
recent quarterly report, the company's "Platform
and Other" offerings reached a 2.1 billion
annual run rate. Overall, the company generated
2.85 billion in quarterly revenue, nearly all of
it related to cloud computing. That was a 24
percent year-over-year increase. Synergy's
Dinsdale says that Salesforce was sixth overall
in the IaaS, PaaS and hosted private cloud market
with about 4 percent of the market (just a
fraction of a percent less than Allibaba.
97. Oracle Cloud
Oracle got a late start in the cloud computing
market, but that hasn't stopped it from growing
into the seventh largest IaaS, PaaS and hosted
private cloud vendor. Based on Synergy data, it
owns about 2 percent of that space. The
company's last quarterly report announced that
cloud revenues (including SaaS) climbed 32
percent year-over-year to hit 1.6 billion. On
just the PaaS and IaaS side, revenue increased 28
percent to total 415 million. The company has
been heavily promoting its Autonomous Database
and other AI-based PaaS and SaaS offerings, and
it has predicted very strong future growth for
its cloud services.
