What is a Fiber Optic Cable?
  • Fiber optic cables are made of thinnest strands
of glass that enable the transmission of
information as light. A fiber optic cable may
contain a huge number of glass strands from a few
to millions. These cables carry information by
    using a light-based technology.
  • The main part of the cable is known as core where
light particles travel through. There is another
layer wrapped around the core, called cladding
that keeps light particles inside the core. When
light signals are sent through the fiber optic
cable, they reflect off the core. These light
signals dont travel at the speed of light. They
travel around 30 slower than the speed of light,
and this is because of the denser glass layers
    (cladding).

Types of Fiber Optic Cables
  • Single-mode Fiber
  • There are mainly two types of fiber optic cables
    - single-mode fiber cables and multimode fiber
cables. Single-mode fiber cables are the simplest
cables. These cables have thin core around 5-10
microns. These fiber cables are generally used
for TV, internet, and telephone signals. Due to
very thin, signals travel down the cable without
    bouncing off the edges.

Types of Fiber Optic Cables
  • Multimode Fiber Cables
  • Multimode cables are ten times bigger than
single-mode cables. These cables are used to send
information over short distances because light
signals bounce off the edges. Since these cables
have broad diameter, it results in more data
transmission. However, this also means that there
is a huge risk of signal loss and interference.
  • Fiber optical cables are better than traditional
copper cables because of higher bandwidth and
    faster speed.

Uses for Fiber Optic Cables
  • Computers - Due to higher bandwidth and less risk
of signal interference, fiber optics are used in
    computer networking.
  • Broadcasting - Fiber optic cables are used in
broadcasting to carry data for lots of channels.
Higher bandwidth provides better connections and
    performance.
  • Medical Instruments - These are fiber optics that
have enabled medical practitioners to peer inside
    our bodies without cutting off.
  • Military and Space - Fiber optic cables are used
to connect military equipment such as missile
launch sites and radar tracking stations. Since
these cables don't give off electromagnetic
    radiation, enemies cant detect presence.
