Title: Varicose Veins Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

1
Varicose Veins
  • Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

2
What are Varicose Veins?
  • Varicose veins are enlarged, blueish veins
visible just under the skins surface, usually
    affecting the feet and legs
  • Varicose veins develop when small valves within
the vein stop functioning properly allowing
blood to flow the wrong way or to pool
  • Varicose veins represent a cosmetic concern for
most people, though they are also a sign of an
underlying problem, suggesting poor vein function
which can lead to more serious health problems.
Therefore, people with varicose veins should be
    evaluated by a physician
  • They usually appear blue or dark purple in color
and affect approximately 23 of men and women in
    the US

3
The causes of varicose veins
  • Varicose veins occur when the vein walls get over
stretched, less flexible and weaker, allowing
blood to leak the wrong way and eventually flow
    backwards
  • When this happens, blood can pool in the vein
making it appear darker, larger and swollen
  • Veins which are located furthest from heart are
most commonly affected, which is why feet and
legs are often where condition occurs
  • Varicose veins are also caused because of
pregnancy, menopause and prolonged use of birth
    control pills

4
What are the Symptoms of Varicose veins
  • In addition to dark, bulging veins, symptoms of
    varicose veins include
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Burning or throbbing sensations
  • Muscle cramps
  • Heavy or achy feeling in legs
  • Bleeding from affected veins
  • If veins rupture or lead to ulcers, they will
    require treatment

5
Seeing a Podiatrist to Diagnose Varicose Veins
  • Podiatrists, who are varicose vein specialists,
will begin with physical exam to diagnose problem
    and asses symptoms
  • Ultrasound may be recommended to determine
functionality of valves in veins, or to check for
    blood clot evidence
  • Treatment plan will then be recommended by your
    doctor fortunately most varicose vein
    treatments dont require hospital stays
  • New, advanced treatment for varicose veins are
normally covered by insurance if done for
    medical reasons

6
Varicose Veins Treatment Options
  • Your podiatrist or specialist will recommend the
best treatment plan based on your individual case
  • Invasive options are not necessary if there are
no associated symptoms and patient is OK with
    appearance
  • Conservative treatment options include
  • Self-care/lifestyle changes more exercise,
keeping legs elevated and avoiding sitting or
    standing for long periods
  • Compression socks or stockings

7
Do I need surgery for varicose veins
  • If your varicose veins do not respond to
conservative treatment or youre still feeling
    pain, surgery may be recommended
  • Treatment for severe varicose veins includes
  • Phlebectomy - surgical procedure which involves
    removal of the vein
  • Sclerotherapy - a medical procedure which
involves injecting a chemical to close the veins
  • Laser surgery using light bursts to make vein
    fade and eventually disappear
  • Ligations stripping when top of vein is tied
and sealed and is then removed (stripped)

8
After Your Varicose Vein Treatment Procedure
  • Surgery is often most effective treatment
procedure for varicose veins and spider veins
  • Common side effects post treatment include
swelling, pain, bruising and skin color change
  • Recovery time after vein surgery depends on the
severity of the vein problem and treatment option
    chosen
  • Normally, patient can get back to work within 24
hours with most surgical procedures for varicose
    veins
  • Patients are encouraged to work and exercise
safely after surgical procedure. Inactivity can
    lead to blood clots
