5
Introduction of Silica Gel
  • Silica Gel is Granular,Vitreous,Porous from of
    Silicon Dioxide made Synthetically from
    Sodiumsilicate.
  • Silica Gel contains a nano-porous Silica
    micro-structure, suspended inside a liquid.
  • Most applications of silica gel require it to be
dried, in which case it is called silica xerogel.
  • Silica xerogel is tough and hard.
  • As a desiccant, it has an average Poresize of 2.4
nanometers and has a strong affinity for water
    molecules.
  • Silica Gel is most commonly encountered in
everyday life as beads in a small (typically 2 x
    3cm) paper packet.
  • In this from, it is used as a desiccant to
control local humidity to avoid spoilage or
    degradation of some goods.
  • Silica gel packets usually bear warning for the
    user not to eat contents.

6
HISTORY
  • silica gel was in existence as early as the 1640s
    as a scientific curiosity.
  • It was used in World War I for the adsorption of
vapours and gases in gas mask canisters.
  • The synthetic route for producing silica gel was
patented by chemistry professor Walter A. Patrick
at Johns Hopkins University in 1918.
  • In World War II, silica gel was indispensable in
the war effort for keeping penicillin dry,
    protecting military equipment from moisture
    damage.
  • as a fluid cracking catalyst for the production
of high octane gasoline, and as a catalyst
support for the manufacture of butadiene from
ethanol, feedstock for the synthetic rubber
    program.

7
TYPES
  • Type-1 -Non-Indicating White
    Silica Gel
  • Type-2 - Indicating Silica Gel

8
Slica Gel White
The silica gel white is a natural desiccant that
is produced from Silicon Dioxide after the
application of certain synthetic processes.
Non-Indicating Type Silica Gel Desiccant
9
Silica Gel Blue
Silica gel blue is another option for controlling
moisture which is obtains cobalt chloride in it
also known as self-indicating type of silica
gel. We can identify silica gel being full of
moisture which can absorb a big amount of water
from internal surface area.
Indicating Type Silica Gel Desiccant
