Title: The Story Behind Super Glue
1 - The Story Behind
- Super Glue
2The Story Behind Super Glue
- The speed with which the Cyanoacrylate or the
super glues act make them useful towards medical,
industrial and household applications, among
others. Here is a brief history of the super glue
that is now a fundamental product to many
industries.
3The first patent
- The original or the first patent for super glue
Cyanoacrylate is credited to the Goodrich Company
(the year 1942). The Harry Coover Jr. led
scientist team stumbled upon a chemical that
glued to everything it was contacted with
(including plastics, metals etc.). The finding
was made in the course of the discovery of a
substance that can provide for the clear sights
of the plastic guns.
4The Eastman Kodak companys team of researchers
that actually realized the potential of
Cyanoacrylate in commercial applications in the
year 1951 included Coover Jr. and Fred Joyner.
Eastman 910 was the name of first super glue
sold commercially in the year 1958.
5Loctites Cyanoacrylate
- Loctite acquired the product from Eastman Kodak
in the 1960s. The new repackaged name of the
product sold by the company was Loctite Quick
Set 404. The firm also developed its own super
glue technology in the year 1971, and the new
product line was named Super Bonder. The firm
was soon the major seller of Cyanoacrylate
furniture glue in the North American market.
6Other super glue manufacturers
- NSCC or National Starch and Chemical Company (a
Unilever's subsidiary) acquired the whole
Cyanoacrylate business from Eastman Kodak in
1971. The super glue was now sold under the brand
name Permabond, which also included other
products of the company. Other prominent
producers of super glue after the 1970s included
LePage. As of now, the original formula for
Cyanoacrylate is held by Permabond.
7The hanging car story
- Super glue soon caught public imagination in the
USA. A radio station in the country actually
decided to test the glue and the claims made by
different companies towards its effectiveness of
binding all kinds of materials. The test included
hanging a car by using the super glue, and it
worked! The glue provided for the lifting of 3000
pounds of weight in only 10 seconds, and up to
5000 pounds later on.
8Uses
- Super glue is used widely as an adhesive. The
glue has a shelf life of 12 months when unopened
and 1 month once the bottle is opened.
9Super glue, also known as CA glue, is a necessary
piece to a woodturners woodturning supplies. It
is used as a ca finish, gap filler, and for
stabilizer for wood inlay. Super glue is also
used as shoe repair glue because of its fast and
strong bonding qualities, and it is also used for
binding the electronics and as retention
dressings. Marine aquarium hobbyists use the glue
as fragging glue when gluing coral frags to rocks
because of the water resistant capabilities of
the instant adhesive. The adhesive works well as
a bonding agent in archery for arrow fletching,
arrow vanes, and arrow inserts.
