What is TMJ Disorder?
  • TMJ is a pair of joints that joins the mandible
    bone of the jaw to the temporal bone at the base
    of the skull.
  • TMJ disorder is an inflammation of the
    temporomandibular joint, which is the jaw joint
    that you use to open and close your mouth when
    you talk, chew, yell, yawn and bite.
  • Problems with your jaw and the muscles in your
    face that control it are known as
    temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
  • TMJ Disorder can cause pain in your jaw joint and
    in the muscles that control jaw movement.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
  • Here are some symptoms of TMJ Disorder
  • Headaches and Tender jaw muscles
  • Painful muscles in the face, neck, and shoulders
  • Clicking and popping of the jaw joint
  • Earaches and pain behind the eyes
  • Difficulty opening and closing the mouth
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Reduced ability to open or close your mouth
  • Discomfort when you bite or chew

Causes of TMJ Disorder
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth
  • A poorly aligned bite
  • An injury or trauma to the face or jaw
  • Poor posture
  • Excessive gum chewing
  • Emotional Stress, which can cause tightening of
    facial and jaw muscles or clenching of teeth

Treatment of TMJ Disorder
  • Applying ice or cold packs to the area of joint
  • Avoiding excessive chewing
  • Reducing stress and following relaxation
    techniques
  • Correct bite alignment
  • Bite guards/night guards
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Neuromuscular dentistry
  • Surgery in cases of more severe pain
