Contemporary dance Borrows elements from
classical, moderate and jazz styles of dancing.
Today it is the most prominent genre that
professional dancers around the world training,
particularly in the west. Contemporary dance also
borrows elements from different styles of dancing
around the world. Below are some of the most
basic steps that Anyone can master.
3
  • Ball Change

This movement has two stops. Your weight is
distributed on the ball of 1 foot while the other
is next to it or behind it. Then, you switch the
weight with a step on the other foot. Usually
accompanied by number counting or stepping on a
beat, it can also be modified to include
flourishes and kicks.

  • Moonwalk

Made famous in Michael Jackson Billie Jean Music
video, the moonwalk creates the illusion of
walking backward while being drawn forward.
Essentially, it looks like the dancers gliding
backward. While the front foot is flat on the
ground and the back foot is in tiptoe position,
the front foot starts to glide backward past tee
back foot. The back foot flattens to the ground
Simultaneously. When repeated in a fluid motion,
you get a seamless moonwalk. Modifications can
make it look like the dancer is gliding in a
circle or even forwards.

  • The Thunder Clap

The thunderclap involves clapping in the air with
a sliding motion. The dancer raises one hand,
with the second one meeting it halfway to make a
clapping sound, at the same time fully extending
that hand. Usually performed to the beat of the
rhythmic music, this step looks easy in throes
but can take practice to master. Variations
include added legwork and changing the position
of the hands
6
Although contemporary dance has borrowed
influence of strong and controlled legwork from
classical forms like ballet, it also has elements
of torso movement borrowed from modern dance.
Floor work, fall and recovery, improvisation and
unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and
direction are also signature moves for this dance
form. Occasionally, a contemporary dance routine
will also include elements of non-western dance
forms such as those from Africa or Japan as well
depending on the choreography and the dancers
own style.
