Title: Early Signs of Parkinson's Disease
1Early Signs of Parkinson's Disease
2Loss of smell
Early signs of Parkinson's disease can be so
subtle as to be overlooked. Some symptoms are
fleeting at first, and most people don't give
them much attention.
This strange symptom may occur many years before
classic symptoms of Parkinson's disease present,
and some people do not realize their loss or take
it seriously.
3Sleep disorders
Extreme jerks during sleep, kicking out or
falling out of bed can indicate the onset of
Parkinson's disease. Vivid dreaming may be
concomitant with the jerks and kicking. These
symptoms may arrive much earlier than classic
Parkinson's symptoms.
Depression
Longstanding depression may eventually lead to
Parkinson's disease. A new study presented at the
2012 American Academy of Neurology meeting
suggested that those with depression who acquire
Parkinson's disease do so earlier than those
without depressive symptoms.
Dizziness or feeling faint
Many people occasionally feel a bit dizzy when
they suddenly rise from a chair. This is a sign
of low blood pressure, called orthostatic
hypotension. Low blood pressure is linked to
Parkinson's disease,
4Hunched posture
Poor posture with a curved spine becomes more
apparent with normal aging. However, a stooped
position, as if unable to hold the body upright
or to balance properly, can be a tell-tale sign
of Parkinson's onset.
Rigid muscles
Tight and sore muscles are often a sign of normal
aging, in that muscle recovery from exercise has
slowed. However, very stiff muscles with pain,
limited range of motion and presenting on one
side of the body should be investigated.
Loss of unconscious movement
Unconscious movement is the automatic correction
of balance, smiling during conversation and eye
blinking. These are all actions humans perform
without thinking about them. Failing to blink
regularly is a sign of Parkinson's disease,
contributing to the mask-like expression
characteristic of PD.
5Unintelligible speech
Soft speech with slurred hesitation, particularly
in those who always spoke distinctly, is a
classic symptom of Parkinson's onset. The
inflections of normal speech are absent, and a
monotone becomes evident.
Shuffling
Slowed, rigid pace and foot-dragging is very
common to Parkinson's disease. This may happen
occasionally at first, but gradually becomes the
person's constant gait.
Tremors
Tremors are classically associated with
Parkinson's disease, but slight trembling is
common with nervousness or overwork.
Micrographic, or tiny handwriting, is often a
confirming sign of Parkinson's disease, because
the writer is attempting to control a constant
tremor and write smoothly.
Sometimes a person rolls the tongue or lips over
and over again, and family may not realize that
this is not just a habit. Subtle shaking of the
head, hands, chin, leg or tongue are serious
signs. The sign often goes away when the
extremity is resting, but return with intentional
movement.
