About This Presentation
Title:

Breast Augmentation

Description:

Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures performed by plastic surge-ons. Women may choose to undergo breast augmentation because of breasts that are felt to be under-developed, differences in breast size, or changes after pregnancy or breast-feeding. Some women may be happy with their breasts but just want them made fuller. Often after weight loss, aging, or childbirth, a woman's breast volume and shape may change. Augmentation can be performed with either saline or silicone implants. The pro-cedure takes approximately 1.5 hours and is done under general anesthesia. There are typ-ically 3 methods to perform the breast lift. These include the inframmamary (under the breast), periareolar (around the nipple), and the transaxillary (armpit) incisions. Implants are placed under the muscle to reduce chances of infection and better long term results. Breast shape continues to improve and the implants will gradually descend for the first few months after surgery. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Title: Breast Augmentation

1
Breast Augmentation
8 Essential Questions
2
WHAT ARE THE RISKS WITH BREAST AUGMENTATION?
1
  1. Capsular Contracture - when scar tissue forms
around the implants causing the breasts to harden
  2. Infection - Bacterial contamination originating
from the implant and/or the surgical environment
  3. Necrosis - improper healing, usually due to
circulatory issues, which causes the death of
    surrounding tissue
  4. Rupture/Leakage - the risk, while small,
increases over time resulting in the potential
    problems after 10-15 years
  5. Numbness - Possible long term loss in nipple or
    breast sensation

3
SHOULD MY BREAST IMPLANTS BE PLACED UNDER OR OVER
THE MUSCLE?
2
  • Under the Muscle Placement
  • Breasts have more natural look with less
    rippling, better support
  • There is reduced risk of capsular contracture or
    skin deformation
  • Procedure is more difficult and invasive with
    longer recovery time
  • Initially the muscles are relaxed and breasts may
    appear a bit high

4
SHOULD MY BREAST IMPLANTS BE PLACED UNDER OR OVER
THE MUSCLE?
2
  • Over the Muscle Placement
  • Less invasive procedure results in less pain
    after surgery
  • Easier to create cleavage and an enhanced
    feminine appearance
  • There is a somewhat less natural look to the
    breasts
  • More likely to be stretch marks or blemishes over
    the long term

5
WHICH IMPLANT TYPE IS BETTER, SALINE OR SILICONE?
3
  • Silicone implants are better because they...
  • Are soft and offer the look and feel of natural
    breast tissue
  • Are available in a wide variety of shapes and
    sizes
  • Are less likely to develop ripples, wrinkles, and
    encapsulation
  • Are the most intensively tested medical appliance
    in history
  • Are lighter and therefore less likely to migrate
    due to gravity

6
WILL I LOSE FEELING IN MY BREAST OR NIPPLES?
4
  1. Its normal for patients to lose some breast or
    nipple sensitivity
  2. Aerola incisions increase the chances of losing
    sensation
  3. Inframammary fold incisions can mitigate
    sensation loss
  4. Larger implants correlate to higher risk of
    sensitivity changes
  5. Breast and nipple sensitivity typically returns
    after 3-6 months

7
WHAT ABOUT A PREGNANCY WITH BREAST IMPLANTS?
5
  1. Implants do not interfere with pregnancy
  2. Most women can breast-feed successfully following
    breast augmentation
  3. Implants reduce volume loss following pregnancy
  4. Placement under the muscle allows for extra
    protection of milk ducts
  5. Sagging or dimpling skin can sometimes be an issue

8
WILL I HAVE TO REPLACE MY IMPLANTS SOMEDAY?
6
  1. Implants do not have an expiration date, although
    most carry a 10-year warranty
  2. Unless a patient has a problem there is no need
    to replace them
  3. Typical problems requiring replacement are
    deflation (saline) or rupture (silicone)
  4. Overall breast implant failure rate from
    deflation or rupture is 1-3
  5. Other possible reasons for replacement are size
    adjustments and asymmetry

9
HOW CAN I MINIMIZE/CONCEAL SCARRING?
7
  1. Wear your compression bra as instructed
  2. Dont reach up, avoid lifting and stretching
  3. Leave your healing incision undisturbed,
  4. Keep your incision clean and well-bandaged
  5. Minimize driving and exposure to the sun

10
IS SURGERY SAFE IN LATVIA?
8
  1. Latvia of today is a modern Scandinavian country
  2. Equipment and technology are latest,
    state-of-the-art
  3. For our doctors, advanced international training
    is obligatory
  4. Medical tourism is an key part of the Latvian
economy - happy foreign patients are our top
    priority
