All You Need to Know About Safety Helmets
For a firefighter his helmet is not just part of
his gear. Most firefighters are also emotionally
attached to their helmets, many seeing it as a
proud testament to their courage, fires fought
and lives saved. The soot on the helmet is taken
as a proof of valour and not dirt that must be
washed away. Clearly, the safety helmet is
obviously not just a part of fire fighting
equipment, it is also one of most prized
possessions for a fire fighter. Given its
importance in providing safety in a very
dangerous job environment, the manufacturing of
safety helmets is also very important. This is
why it is important to look for reliable safety
helmets manufacturers for this crucial piece of
equipment.

  • Functions of the safety helmet
  • Why is the safety helmet so important? The reason
is evident in the name. The safety helmet
provides three-pronged safety to the firefighter,
    saving them from
  • Heat
  • Fire
  • Falling debris

4
Safety from fire is an obvious benefit. Along
with their clothes and boots, a firefighter is
required to be completely covered to protect
their body from getting burnt. But fire is not
the only hot commodity when a fire breaks out.
The air is often so hot that it scorch the skin.
This is what makes the helmet important in
protecting the head. Fires are also a security
hazard because of crumbling structures. With fire
weakening the structural strength of a building,
firefighters often have to deal with rough and
collapsing floors and debris falling from
overhead. The helmet is critical in this case. In
a fire, even a small debris can be fatal for
someone standing underneath.
5
History The helmet has gone through quite a few
changes over time. As new and better materials
were found, safety helmets manufacturers have
brought in better and lighter helmets. The
helmets have changed from leather to different
alloys and now styled on lightweight polymers.
The first helmets worn by recognised
firefighting units were made of helmets. These
are still used by a few units. However, for most
firefighters leather helmets are mostly just a
traditional symbol. The move to metal helmets
occurred under Napoleon Bonaparte who introduced
the French Army to brass helmets. The brass
helmets were soon copied across Europe. In
Britain these were known as Merryweather helmets
with one exception. The officers helmets were
also silver plated. However, metal helmets had
one drawback - they are conducive to electricity.
This became a major hazard as the use of
electricity became commonplace.
6
Metal helmets were, hence, replaced by a
composite of rubber and cork. But these again
proved inadequate during the WWII raids. Steel
helmets were introduced, which were close to
military helmets. Many fire units also used
aluminium or an alloy of aluminium for helmets.
However, most countries are now moving towards a
composite material for their firefighters with
safety helmets manufacturers following strict
guidelines on the composition.
7
The Modern Safety helmets The metal helmets that
were the norm eventually showed a number of
defects. These helmets lacked thermal insulation
and the helmet kept the face and neck largely
unprotected. The first commissioned development
took place in France by Gallet who were designing
the helmets according to the new requirements by
the Paris Fire Brigade.
8
Known as the F1 helmets, the new helmets also
carried communication systems within. This design
has now been adapted across the world. The modern
helmet is made of composite material with
elements like polymers, plastic, glass fibre and
others. The helmet is actually stronger as well
as lighter. The lighter helmets is easier and
more comfortable to carry. The safety helmets
manufacturers also have to adhere to strictly
laid standards, such as the EN 443 European
standard.
9
  • Essentials of a good helmet
  • Weather streamlined or bulky, few elements are
standard in a fire safety helmet. These are the
basic norms that every safety helmets
    manufacturers have to follow.
  • A brim at the front to protect the eye and the
face from any falling debris or fire.
  • A rear flap or brim to protect from heat and
    water.
  • A good suspension system that ensures a snug fit
    and comfort
  • Light weight to ensure that the wearer can wear
    it for long without tiring

10
Conclusion Strict standards followed in helmet
manufacturing has ensured the safety of
firefighters. Safety helmets manufacturers have
experimented with various elements over the years
to make these lighter, stronger and more
comfortable.
