DURING WINTER

Most ants tend to consume and store excess foods
during summer and fall. This allows them to
store some fat so that they can go without food
during winter. As the temperature goes down, the
body temperature of ants goes down as well. They
remain dormant and move slowly to conserve
energy. They feed off the nutrients from the food
they consumed earlier.

A N T S W I N T E R S T A Y Ants like to stay
in warmer places during the winter. The
preferred places include ant hills deep down the
ground, tree trunks or under rocks. Ants
basically prefer places where it is a bit warmer
and they can stay together tightly.

H O W A N T S S T A Y In order to stay warm,
ants use the heat they get from one another.
They close the exits of their winter homes as
they don't go out in the winter and crowd
tightly around the queen to keep themselves
warm. Once the weather becomes warmer the ants
re-open the exits.

T Carpenter ants are little different from
other ants. They prefer to live in our homes
above ground by building their nests and
settling in cavities of our homes such as walls,
ceilings, and floors. Carpenter ants are
generally attracted to wet and decayed woods.
They can be seen outside their nests, unlike
other ants.

C H A N G E S I N B E H A V I O R Some of the
ant species perform creative tricks to regulate
their body temperature during the seasons by
building tunnels that collect heat and using the
heat of decomposing leaves. However, the behavior
of the ants changes when the weather becomes
extremely cold as their body does not permit to
carry on the same task.
