2Mysore Palace History
The word Mysoreorginates from the word
mahishurmeaning The town of Mahishasura in
Kannada. Mysore has been linked with the Puranic
story found in the Devi Bhagavatha. As stated in
the story in the Devi Purana, Mysore was ruled by
the demon Kind Mahishasura, a buffalo-headed
monster. In reaction to the prayer of the Gods
and Goddesses to rescue them from the demon,
Goddess Parvathi, took birth as Chamundeshwari
and killed the monster on top of the Chamundi
hill located close to Mysore.
3Mysore Culture
For many centuries, Mysore has been a city where
all religions lived harmoniously. At its cultural
peak, under the Vijayanagar Empire, the Wodeyar
rulers encouraged religion and culture, without
discrimination. This evolved into a distinct

The KRS dam and the adjoining Brindavan

river Kaveri in 1924.
It is the main source of water for the districts
of Mysore and Mandya. The water is used for

the capital of the state of Karnataka. The water
released from this dam flows into the state of
Tamil Nadu, and is stored in Mettur dam in the
Salem district.

6Mysore Zoo
Visiting the oldest zoo in India is becoming a

Mysore Zoo was founded by Maharaja Chamaraja
Wodeyar in 1892. It flourished under Royal
financing but was eventually handed over to the
government after independence. Today the Zoo is
equipped with modern facilities, captivating
animals, and has become a pioneer in breeding
methods for animals in captivity. Mysore Zoo was
started with an area of 10.9 Acres and during
1907 another 6.22 acre was added to the zoo.
7St. Philomena Church
The St. Philomenas Church in Mysore is one of
the oldest churches in India. It is over 200
years old. Initially over 250 years ago there was
a small church in its place. When the capital of
Mysore state was move from Srirangapatnam to
Mysore city in 1799, many British officers and
soldiers came and settled down in Mysore.

The Mysore Zoo, established in 1892,the Karanji
and Kukkarahalli lakes are popular recreational
destinations. Mysore has the Regional Museum of
Natural History, the Folk Lore Museum, the
Railway Museum and the Oriental Research
Institute. The city is a centre for yoga-related
health tourism that attracts domestic and foreign
visitors, particularly those who, for years, came

neighbouring Mandya Districts Krishnarajasagar

9All About Mysore
The Vijayanagara Empire disintegrated in 1565.
The power vacuum created soon after was exploited
by Raja Wadiyar (ruled 15781617). He expanded
the borders of the Mysore kingdom and in 1610
changed the capital city from Mysore to
Srirangapatna a rare island formed by the river
Kaveri, which provided natural protection against
military attacks. Today Mysore is a growing,
highly motivated city that has been able to
retain its picturesque old traditions and
peaceful charm. Today the city is famous
worldwide for its excellent sandalwood and
rosewood artifacts, stone sculptures, incense
sticks, inlay work with ivory and its exquisite
silk sarees.
