About This Presentation
Title:

The Symptoms of Opioid Withdrawl

Description:

Why withdrawals? Prolonged and habitual use of opioids can alter the brain and lead to physical dependence. Over time, the body develops a tolerance to the drug—it needs ever-increasing amounts in order to function normally. When someone with a physical dependency quits using painkillers, the body must adapt. The result is withdrawal, which gives rise to a range of psychological and physical symptoms. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

  • Opioid users may begin to experience early onset
symptoms within 6 to 24 hours after their last
    use.
  • After the first day, an entirely new and more
disagreeable set of symptoms takes hold. These
may last for up to a week.
  • Opioid withdrawal isnt dangerous, but
  • it can be uncomfortable, even painful.
  • The severity of the symptoms depends on how long
and how frequently the person has used opioids.

  • Agitation People who stop taking opioids
    frequently become agitated and restless.
  • Anxiety They may also become uneasy and nervous

  • Insomnia Opioid withdrawal can cause
    sleeplessness in many users.
  • Muscle Aches Discomfort can be localized or
    generalized.

  • Yawning They may also find themselves yawning
    frequently.

5
  • Dilated Pupils After a while, the pupils may
widen, just as they do when the person is on
    drugs.
  • Goose Bumps The persons body may break out in
    goose bumps.
  • Rapid Heartbeat Its not unusual for the heart
to race as the body tries to adapt to life
    without the drug.
  • High Blood Pressure The stress of withdrawal
can cause blood pressure to rise.

6
  • Abdominal Cramping Opioids affect the
    gastrointestinal system. Withdrawal symptoms
include pain and cramping in the abdominal area.
