The Sulcata tortoise which is also known as the
African spurred tortoise is the third largest
species in the world after the giant tortoises
from the Galapagos and Aldabras. If you are

  • Diet - The African Spurred is an herbivorous
tortoise, thus they require a high fiber diet
consisting mainly of grasses, hay, weeds or
roughage. For the first year, sulcatas should be
fed daily, thereafter 3 times weekly.
  • Environment - African Spurred Tortoises or
Sulcata Tortoises require warm, dry environments
and so if you live in a humid area, be very
careful about keeping these tortoises outdoors.

  • Health - A healthy tortoise will have good
weight, muscular vigor and a good withdrawal
response when a hind limb is gently pulled. The
eyes should be wide open when awake, slightly
rounded cheeks, and a bilaterally symmetrical
    head.
  • Breeding - There are a large number of sulcatas
for adoption, hence breeding is not recommended.
In southern California breeding usually, occurs
during hot days and months of the year with
egg-laying occurring during the following late
    winter or spring.

  • Hatchlings - Hatchlings measure approximately 45
to 50 mm long, weigh between 25 to 30 grams, and
are a uniform pale yellow-ivory color. When
housing hatchlings, the enclosure must have a
warm side and a cool side for thermoregulation
with a provision for UVB producing fluorescent
    lights.
