  • If you sense that your child has bad breath,
they might have developed poor brushing habits.
However, this is a common symptom of your child
poorly brushing their teeth, it is not always the
cause of bad breath. Although we highly recommend
you to seek out the help of a Children Dentist
San Diego, your child may have other health
problems causing their bad breath. Below, are
five common symptoms that are closely linked to
bad breath that your child might have.

1. Dry Mouth
Since your child is still young, they are not as
dependent as we all like taking care of their
mouths. Kids that are prone to getting dry mouth
are usually involved in sports, which can leave
them dehydrated, which can reduce the amount of
saliva they have in their mouth.
Although this doesnt require an immediate trip
to their local pediatric dentist, you should make
sure that your child is drinking plenty of water
and is managing the amount of time they spend
outdoors, especially in extreme heat.

2. Sinus Infection
Sinus infections are a low-worry condition that
shouldnt have you rushing to your childs
primary physician. Simply put, sinus infections
are a buildup of fluid that can produce a gross
odor. Symptoms that accompany this condition
include tooth pain, sore throat, or a runny nose.
However, if your child is still suffering from a
sinus infection and they still have a poor oral
odor, you should contact their local physician.

3. Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is a serious oral health condition
that can produce a nasty odor in your childs
mouth. Plus, even if your child brushes and
flosses more often, these tactics still wont
prevent further decay from occurring.
The best bet is to visit your local doctor and
see what they suggest to do to treat your childs
bad breath and poor oral hygiene.

4. Clogged Nose
Though this may not be your first thought when it
comes to bad breath, this certainly can be a
factor. An object stuck in the nose of your
child, like a coin or a bean, can create a pretty
bad odor. Ask your child if there is anything up
their nose or head to the doctor.

5. Tonsil Infection
You can often diagnose a tonsil infection at
home. Simply use a flashlight to look inside your
childs mouth. Their tonsils should appear to be
pink and you should not see any spots. If their
tonsils look inflamed or are red and white, you
should head to the doctors office. Along with
the bacteria already in your childs mouth, the
infection can lead to bad breath.
