other handmade carpet varieties. A handmade

idea about the characteristics of handmade silk

2) Construction of a handmade silk carpet
Handmade silk carpet is hand knotted on a
handloom. A handloom is the foundation of
horizontal and vertical woods. Handlooms are
adjustable so weavers can adjust these according
to the size of handmade carpets.   An average
weaver can tie about 10,000 knots per day. So you
can imagine how long time it can take to complete
one rug especially if weavers are weaving a large
size handmade carpet.

3) Color Combination
Handmade silk carpets are woven in various color
combinations. A handmade silk rug contains 15-35
colors in a single area rug. So you can think
that how difficult it is to dye silk yarn in
different colors and knotting these according to
the design patterns.

4) Material Used
Handmade silk carpets are woven using two types
of material combination. First one is silk on
cotton material and the second is silk on silk.
For silk carpets, silk is exported by China which
is producing the finest quality of silk material.

A) Silk on cotton carpet
In this type of carpet, silk is handmade knotted
on the cotton foundation. It means the warp in
cotton and weft in silk. The numbers of knots are
324 knots/ sqr feet approx. This type of carpet
is less expensive.

B) Silk on Silk Carpet
In this type of carpet, silk is hand knotted on
silk foundation. In another way, the warp and
weft both are in pure silk. The numbers of knots
are 576 knots/sqr feet approx. This type of
carpet is highly exclusive as compared to other
carpets.

5) Durability
Silk carpets have no backing support. These are
hand-knotted like a flat weave technique. The
density of knots is very high in a silk carpet.
So these carpets are highly durable.

6) Care maintenance of a silk carpet
Handmade silk carpets are totally hand-washable
but these are expensive so I recommend you to use
a professional cleaning. If you use a brush and
hot water for washing a silk carpet then the
piles of carpet may be destroyed. Never place
these types of carpet directly in sunlight, place
it in shadow.

7) Ideal Place
Handmade silk carpets are exclusive ones. So you
should use it at low traffic areas like a
bedroom, guest room, and living room to give a
luxe look to your area.
