How to Discipline a Toddler
  • The one thing that children of all ages need is
consistency. They need to know consistently that
they are loved, are safe and cared for. It
stands to reason then, that one of the most
effective strategies in disciplining a toddler is
    to be consistent.

3
The question is What do parents need to do to be
consistent?
  • Parents needs to agree on a parenting style that
they both agree to adopt. It makes no sense if
one parent says and allows one thing and the
other parent says and allows another thing.
Children at a very early age pick up on this
inconsistency and will play one parent against
the other to get what they want.

4
What other strategies can parents apply to
Discipline a Toddler?
  • Create Family Rules appropriate for the age of
    the child.
  • Control your emotions. Remember children do not
have the emotional intelligence/maturity to keep
control. This day and age children expect
instant gratification. You as a parent need to
use your skills to keep control of your emotions
to ensure that the child learns that their
demands and tantrums dont frustrate you.
  • Pick your battles. It is no use trying to reason
with a toddler who is out of control. Wait for
the right time when the toddler has settled down
and then, get down so that you are at your
childs eye level and calmly explain why their
outbursts wont get them what they want.
  • Punishment should be by way of time out and
according to the age of the toddler.
