Title: The Difference Between Karate and Krav Maga
1The Difference Between Karate and Krav Maga
2A common question we are often asked is What
are the differences between Karate and Krav
Maga? Before delving into this, lets actually
compare the similarities between these two forms
of martial arts.
3Both Karate and Krav Maga focus on building the
mind and body. Much emphasis is placed on
developing a proper stance or footwork, which
creates a foundation for strong techniques and
skills.
4In addition, both require dedication and
commitment from the student, with progress
indicated by way of a belt ranking system. They
have their respective practical applications, as
well as provide a great workout.
5Karate
The exact origin of Karate is not definitive, but
its history can be traced back to 19th century
China and Japan. By the 1930s, it had made its
way to Canada.
6During competitions, there is an underlying
respect for ones opponent an unspoken code of
honour. There are rules and regulations, much
like any other organized sport.
7Krav Maga
Krav Maga (Hebrew for contact combat) came
about in the 1930s, and was integrated into the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as part of their
military training.
8Because Krav Maga is essentially used for
self-defense purposes, there are no competitions
(and hence, no illegal moves).
9Eye rakes, knees/kicks to the groin, and hitting
the base of the skull are but a few of our go-to
strikes. Our M.O. is to shut a person down ASAP
by any and all means necessary.
