3 Types of Anesthesia for Wisdom Tooth Removal
  • Local Anesthesia
  • Your dentist will inject the anesthesia to your
    gums to numb them.
  • You are awake during the tooth extraction, you
    will not feel pain even though youll feel some
    pressure and movement.
  • Sedation Anesthesia
  • Your dentist gives you sedation anesthesia
    through an intravenous (IV) line in your arm.
  • You will not feel any pain and will have limited
    memory of the procedure. Local anesthesia will
    also be injected to numb your gums.

  • General Anesthesia
  • Your dentist might offer general anesthesia
    during special situations.
  • You may inhale medication through your nose or
    have an IV line in your arm, or both and later
    youll lose consciousness.
  • Your medication, breathing, temperature, fluids
    and blood pressure will be monitored by the
    surgical team.
  • Theres no pain and no memory during the
    procedure.

Main Procedures for Wisdom Tooth Removal
  • To expose the tooth and bone, dentist will make
    an incision in the gum tissue.
  • Removes bone that blocks access to the tooth root
  • If easier to remove by pieces, tooth will be
    divided into sections.
  • Removes the tooth
  • Cleans the site of the removed tooth of any
    debris from the tooth or bone
  • Even though its not important, the wound will
    have stitching to make it heal.
  • Places gauze over the extraction site to control
    bleeding and to help a blood clot form.

Signs/Symptoms to Call the Dentist After the
Surgery
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Fever
  • Severe pain not relieved by prescribed pain
    medications
  • Swelling that worsens after two or three days
  • Bad taste in your mouth not removed with
    saltwater rinsing
  • Pus in or oozing from the socket
  • Persistent numbness or loss of feeling
  • Blood or pus in nasal discharge
