What Is Cataract ?As we age, the lens in the
eyes loses its transparent nature and becomes

result.How Is The Procedure Performed ?As the
lens has lost its transparency, the main
objective of the surgery is to replace the
damaged lens with a new one, known as intraocular

the lens would never give a nagging feeling in
the eye and it becomes a permanent part of the
eye. Initially, a topical anesthetic would be
administered to numb the eye area. A small
incision is made in the cornea through blade or
Laser to create a flap. A new lens is fitted
back and in most of the cases, sutures are not
required as very minute incision is made. The
entire eye region is covered with a bandage for
protection, which can be removed after few
hours.

What Are Different Lenses Available ?As we talk
about IOL, different variants made out of
plastic, acrylic or silicone are available and
hence it would be a good idea to discuss with
your surgeon and choose the one that works best
based on your eyesight, lifestyle and cost. In
the recent times, it has almost become a norm to
use flexible IOLs which makes it convenient for
smaller incision and thereby eliminating the
requirement of sutures.

How Long It Takes To Recover ?One of the huge
advantages of cataract surgery is that the entire
procedure is conducted as an outpatient procedure
and completed well within an hour of duration.
Also the recovery from the surgery is very fast
and you would be able to resume all your normal
activities after a day, except for indulging in
heavy and strenuous works. In fact, the patient
can read, walk, write, watch television after few
hours of surgery and can easily carry out basic
works at home. Again, in most of the cases,
cataract surgery is conducted in only one eye at
a time and hence it should never be a problem
