Title: YOGA- OVERVIEW, TIPS & TRENDS
1YOGA- OVERVIEW, TIPS TRENDS
2What is Yoga?
- Yoga is a simple process of reversing the
ordinary outward flow of energy and consciousness
so that the mind becomes a dynamic centre of
direct perception no longer dependent upon the
fallible senses but capable of actually
experiencing truth. - Derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, Yoga means
union of the individual consciousness or soul
with the Universal Consciousness or Spirit.
3History of yoga
The history of Yoga can conveniently be divided
into the following four broad categories
- Vedic yoga
- Preclassical yoga
- Classical yoga
- Postclassical yoga

5How many yoga poses exist?
- Sri Dharma Mittra, an internationally known yoga
teacher is famous for photographing himself in
1,350 asana postures to honour his guru. - There are said to be 84 basic poses. (As
explained by the Lord Shiva in ancient texts). 32
are said to be for mortals. (This makes me think
some of my yoga friends are demi-gods) - The Gheranda Samhita is a classic text of Hatha
yoga. It states that Shiva taught 8,400,000
different asanas.
6Best time to do yoga
- The very best time to practice yoga is first
thing in the morning before breakfast. Upon
waking, empty the bowels, shower if you wish,
then commence the day with your regime of yoga
practices. - The second most conductive time is early evening,
around sunset. - But is it of course far better to do something at
a time of the day which suits one, rather than to
miss out by being too rigid or idealistic. - Yoga Positions (Asanas) may be practiced at any
time of day except within 2-3 hours of having
eaten. You can do postures when the body feels
stiff, tense, tired or hyped-up.
