Fixed Wireless Broadband-What You Need To Know
2
  • When looking through plans offered by your local
ISP, you may notice a lot of terms that you have
never heard of before, things like fixed
wireless, peak or off-peak, etc. It can be really
confusing, especially for people who are not tech
savvy. After all, how is the average person
supposed to know if they need a static IP
internet plan or not? One term you may have seen
while searching for internet plans is the term
fixed wireless broadband. The term has yet to
become a household word, but as time goes on, the
term will become very common. Fixed wireless is
being introduced to lots of Australian households
as part of the rollout of the National Broadband
Network and for many people, fixed wireless is
the way of the future when it comes to providing
    internet.

3
  • What is it?
  • Fixed wireless is a method of delivering high
speed internet to households. As you can tell
from the name, fixed wireless does not rely on
fibre optic cables or wiring to deliver internet,
but rather, radio signals. More specifically,
fixed wireless broadband works by using ground
stations (also called transmission towers) to
deliver internet to subscribers. So, getting
fixed wireless is as easy as installing
transceiver equipment on your house. The
transceivers, in this case, consist of a small,
rectangular shaped dish or antenna, similar to
the concept of cell phone towers.

  • What are the advantages of fixed wireless?
  • There are numerous advantages to using fixed
    wireless broadband over traditional internet
    connections.
  • Weather resistant
  • One of the major issues with satellites is that
they do not perform well in bad weather,
especially heavy rain or snow. The reason being
because the satellite connection has to travel
throughout the entire atmosphere. This is not an
issue with fixed wireless because the ground
stations are land-based, they are not affected by
    storms or clouds.

5
  • Inexpensive
  • One of the major pros when it comes to fixed
wireless is how easy and inexpensive it is to
install. You do not need to rip up streets to
install cables. You simply install the
transmitters and receivers, and thats it.
  • Reliability
  • It is a common myth that fixed wireless
broadband is unstable and unreliable. Fixed
wireless connections do not suffer from latency.
Fixed wireless connections can easily accommodate
gaming, streaming, or any other internet
activities where latency might present a problem.

6
  • People also like to say that physical
    obstructions, like buildings, can cause
disruptions in the fixed wireless system, but
this is not true. Fixed wireless broadband works
perfectly well in areas with heavy amounts of
    trees and buildings.
  • Why it is the future
  • As time goes on and we begin to phase out metal
wiring, people will look for mass market
solutions to provide internet to cities. Not only
is fixed wireless broadband a good solution for
cities, but it is also a great way to bring fast
internet to rural areas which are often unable
to accommodate more expensive solutions like
    fibre optics.
