Compatibility
As stated, allow your homes design to complement
the geographic features of the landscape.  Also,
make sure the size of your home coincides with
the size of the lota too-large home on a smaller
lot and a larger lot with a too-small home will
look unbalanced.  Know the dimensions of the lot
before you build to make sure the sizes of both
home and land are visually compatible and
appealing.

If you have your heart set on a certain style of
home with very large windows, try to find a lot
with outstanding features such as a wooded
enclave, pond, bubbling brook or field of wild
flowers.  Those large windows should serve as a
venue to bring in any outside natural beauty. 
That natural beauty, then, becomes a visual
component of your homes interior.

A Few More Points
Water Be aware of any potential flood damage.  If
a lake, pond or river could be a part of your
lots features, make sure any low spots in a lot
dont become their own flood zones.  Even simple
water run-off can be an issue during a big storm
if enough water has a chance to saturate a
low-lying yard.  A flooded basement or worse can
equate to thousands and thousands of dollars
worth of damage. Zoning If your vision of ideal
retirement is predicated on serenity and
relaxation, check with your local zoning office. 
You may fall in love with a lot that is just far
enough away from civilization to afford the
peace and solitude youve always dreamed of. 
That dream can turn into a bad one, however, if
you discover that a shopping mall, housing area
or highway will be constructed near-by,
unbeknownst to you when you purchased the lot. 
Any undeveloped land close-by should raise a
question or two.  Find out what is being planned
for that type of area because chances are good
that space wont lie vacant for too
long. Bargains Dont, necessarily, settle for a
cheap lot.  You may think, Wow! This is such a
bargain-price for this lot!  What you may not
realize is that the lot may prove to be
unsuitable for certain architectural home designs
for a variety of reasons and those reasons that
may not seem obvious at first.  The expenses that
could incur to modify an unsuitable lot to
accommodate your style of home could prove to be
astronomical.
