• There are many words in the English language that
  can have a number of different meanings. But few
  are as different in meaning as a loafer that is
  both a useless layabout person and a pair of
  shoes.
• The loafer that is the shoe is a slip on version
  without laces and similar to a moccasin. In Spain
  the espadrille comes closest to this type of
  footwear.
• As a casual shoe the loafer is often worn without
  socks but to do so would perhaps be frowned upon
  if worn to the office.
• There is a huge range of loafers from almost
  formal oxblood thick leather that may be highly
  polished and good enough for the office, to much
  more casual and cheaper versions. As you would
  expect, many of the worlds most expensive brands
  have designed their own.

• One pair you can buy on the internet retails at
  3,100. The designer is very well known and the
  loafer in question is made from crocodile skin
  and trimmed with ostrich feathers. Presumably
  that means a very small possible market
  potential.
• Ikon tassel loafers in comparison are a much more
  realistic buy for most of us. The tassel when
  first added some fifty years ago by one
  manufacturer caused shoe retailers to question
  whether it could still be called a loafer.
• But then the same thing happened with penny
  loafers. The penny loafer was an American
  invention and incorporated an actual penny in the
  tongue of the shoe. These loafers were warn
  extensively by college kids and the penny was to
  be used only in an emergency to call home from a
  phone box.
• Since penny loafers and tassel loafers became
  accepted as any other loafer things have moved
  along further and there are many variations of
  loafers. But the theme running through them all
  is that they must be slip-ons with no laces.

• Loafers are also designed for women and again,
  these can be worn with no socks or other leg
  cover although a smart office pair are likely to
  be worn with tights. Their design is little
  different from the male version though they may
  have a slightly greater heal height.
• The ikon tassel version of loafer is copied by
  many other manufacturers. A tassel is defined in
  most dictionaries as a group of equal length
  threads tied together at one end. But with
  loafers this is not always strictly so.
• It can also mean the leather tongue on top of the
  shoe is cut into different shapes. But clearly
  whatever the adornment its just that. A part of
  the shoe for decoration that could just as easily
  be a buckle or strap.
