    of those days.
  • It is a novel about people's relationships, their
features and inclines to different sides of
    coping with difficulties.

Pre-history
  • The book had been written in 1850 year. It was

manipulations with a public were the usual thing.
It affected on writers, who tried to send people
a message about being true to their ideals.
  • An idea came to Hawthorne after he found an old

vision and a story of that period.

4
Plot
  • The book sends a reader to 40's years of 17
century, to a period of great changes in America.
Young woman Astaire betrayed her missing husband
elderly doctor Chillingworth with a preacher
Dimmesdale. The child of this unholy alliance of
Hester and Dimmesdale was a girl named Pearl.
After Chillingworth returned, he fully devoted
himself to revenge and seeking justice.

5
Plot
  • Hester was publicly ashamed and wearing of a
Scarlet letter on her breast was a sign of
betrayal. The preacher was deprived by a fact of
his mistake. He didn't find a will in himself to
tell the truth and was constantly tormented by
his conscience. But though he considered himself
as a sinner, he was still preaching, and it was
even a worse torture for his dogmatic mind.

6
Critics
  • The novel has an unusual composition, it is made
from sketches and brief pictures from heroes'
    lives.
  • Some critics say that the main idea was to show
puritans' morals, some think that this is a novel
    about a sin and redemption.
  • He purposely makes an accent on the main line,
    heroes and forms.

7
Conclusion
  • The Scarlet Letter was a life-changing novel
for Hawthorne as it brought a great popularity to
    him.
  • Simplicity, understandable heroes' feelings,
interesting raveled story and great dramatic
outcome made this book a bestseller.
  • His times pushed him to write about issues that,
as he predicted, would be actual and exemplary
    for a future generation.
