A candidate must complete a bachelor's degree
program before applying to medical school. After
graduating from medical school, a prospective
internist must complete a three-year residency
training program in internal medicine.

An internist must be experienced in conducting
physical examinations, taking patient medical
histories and understanding the results of
diagnostic tests. They must also coordinate
patient care with psychiatrists, obstetricians
and other specialists. Compassion, integrity and
respect are some traits required to be a
successful internist.
6Subspecialties
An internist has the chance to pursue one of 13
subspecialties cardiology, allergy and
immunology, adolescent medicine, oncology,
gastroenterology, endocrinology, hematology,
geriatrics, sports medicine, etc. which requires
one to three years of additional training in
addition to the 3-year internal medicine
residency.
