Summary
C. R. Bard pioneered visual ultrasound imaging
systems specialized for vascular access in the
United States. As a major manufacturer of PICCs,
CVCs and dialysis catheters, Bard entered the
market with the SiteRite system in 2000. At the
time, Doppler ultrasound systems, such as
Escalons PD Access, were the only ultrasound
machines manufactured for the purpose of vascular
access.

United States. As a major manufacturer of PICCs,
CVCs and dialysis catheters, Bard entered the
market with the SiteRite system in 2000. At the
time, Doppler ultrasound systems, such as
Escalons PD Access, were the only ultrasound
machines manufactured for the purpose of vascular
access. The original SiteRite 1 had limited
capabilities, such as a two-dimensional display
and no real-time imaging. The systems primary
advantages were its cart-based portability and
low price. SiteRite systems sold for 10,000 to
14,000, while multipurpose ultrasound systems
had an ASP of over 30,000. More recent versions
of the SiteRite model, such as the SiteRite 6,
can work at a variety of image depths to
accommodate a variety of patients. Whereas a
small image depth is important for pediatric
patients whose veins are closer to the skin
surface, a deeper image depth can be preferable
for obese patients whose veins may be
significantly deeper.

Replacement rates for vascular access-specific
ultrasound machines vary depending on the machine
and the hospital. Large hospitals located in
urban centers commonly get new machines because
they want to have the newest and most advanced
technology. To facilitate this, some ultrasound
companies offer trade-in services to reduce the
cost of having to buy a new machine every few
years. Older machines can then be resold to
alternate care facilities or to less
technologically advanced countries.
